Looking for garden fence colour thoughts and inspiration!

We have a lot of fencing which is starting to look grey and weathered. We were thinking of a dark grey to compliment the oak decking and spindles. But we have some fecing really close to our living room window and wondering if it will be too dark 🤔

Here's a photo.....thoughts and suggestions welcome!

Dark grey would look stunning. I have painted my fence black. When I started painting my heart sunk thinking what have a done. Once it had dried and the green foliage came up I think it looks lovely. It gives a really good contrast and is quite striking .
The grey will do that too. Go for it.

Agree, dark colours look far better and help fences blend into the background while making plants stand out. They help to make the space feel larger too.

If you want dark go for black. Personally Not a fan of dark grey and I don’t think plants look good behind it

What do you reckon about grey so close out the window. Too dark? Thabk you for your comments!

My black fence starts at the house, I like it.

Stickytreacle · 03/04/2021 14:59

Why not try just doing a single panel near the house to give you an idea? You can get tester pots of garden paint now, then you aren't committed if you hate it.

I think London Clay by FandB is a good foil for plants. We have Off Black and greenery looks stunning against that. Railings is also worth looking at. You need a few more plants to make darker fence panels work though.

Just wanted to thank you - we painted our fence black after I read this thread! We wouldn't have considered black to begin with but we're really happy with it. Now to sort out the untidy droopy bushes.

That looks really good! We're going dark grey too!

Personally, I would be wary about dark grey when you have so much decking too. The later poster's fence looks great as the green really pops, I think you will also need to plant up your planters more to get the same effect

Thank you for your input. Yes, I agree. We've completely cleared all the pots and fence pots to get ready for painting.

We haven't really liked the vast expanse of decking and fence and so trying to split it up by staining the decking an oak colour and the fence in a different colour stain like this photo. What do you think?

Don’t stain!!! It fades. Paint the fence. It lasts much longer. You need external woodwork paint. Use a primer first.

We are having our decking removed. It rotted. Go with Millboard or paving. Staining it won’t help much and definitely not long lasting.

I was about to start a thread asking the same question. We are deciding between dark grey or black. Husband is horrified at the thought of a black fence, but I think it looks fantastic and feel I will regret painting it grey.

The photos of black fences look amazing. Can anyone share any more to help the decisions? 🙏

Cuprinol do a very nice dark grey called "Urban Slate" which might be a compromise?

Black is very harsh. Very dark grey is more subtle. Agree that counterintuitively, dark fences make the garden look bigger.

Unhelpfully I'm in Australia and use Walpamur Ironbark, which flattens to almost black in direct sun, while dark blue shading emerges in half light.

Runnuh · 29/04/2021 22:41

I do like the look of urban slate, thank you. Part of me wants to move away from the grey, but I also feel safer there 🙈😆

JuicyMcJuiceFace · 29/04/2021 22:53

We went with urban slate and it looks nice.

Mamaemmeline · 29/04/2021 23:03

This is ours painted grey. We haven't finished planting and adding fence pots but this gives you an idea.
