Can I change my address?

We live in an old house (let's call it Mill House). Our address is Mill House, Mill Street etc.

About 100 years ago a street was build next to our house (New Street).

The only way to get to our house is by turning into New Street and we're sort of set back from New Street.

Nobody can find our house. Our regular postman can but couriers, takeaways etc are always getting lost. I've tried giving really detailed instructions. I've tried adding New Street in as an additional address line but that's no good if you're choosing from a drop down list. It doesn't help that we have a house name rather than a number.

Has anyone managed to change their address? It would be best if we were Mill House, New Street.

I've googled but all the results relate to changing details when you move house.

Contact the council & they could consider it. Are there other houses on your street? If they are all having the same issues it might be more likely.

I know someone who has successfully done this as they had gates to their property on two roads. So it can definitely be done, how I don't know.

Definitely a council thing, you need the street naming and numbering officer or whoever deals with the property gazateer. Royal Mail and the emergency services get their data from here so once the council agree and update their system it will trickle down eventually.

We're the only house affected and it's because the house was there years before they built the new street. I'm guessing originally the entrance to New Street was the drive to our house, but now it's not in the slightest bit obviously that our house is off Mill Street.

Could you ask the council if you could have a signpost put up?
