Hello

We have been to both Milford and Ash Vale and weighing up which one is better to live in. Any help and insight would be most appreciated. Both have train lines into London. Thank you.

Milford is much nicer! We currently live in Ash Vale and whilst parts of it are nice there's a lot that's not so nice. We're trying to move out of the area.
Milford also has lovely areas surrounding it which Ash Vale doesn't.
Let me know if you have any other particular queries

Thank you @arthurdaly. Milford does seem nice but not many amenities/shops in the village and was wondering if it might be too quiet. Whereabouts are you considering moving to if you don’t mind?

DM lives in Milford - yes it is pretty quiet, Secretts is about the most exciting shop. Godalming is really close by though, and lots more of interest there.

Meant to add - there is some lovely countryside round there though, Milford Common is good for walks, nice kids' playground by the church, Rodborough School is meant to be very good and The Refectory pub does a cracking lunch. There are definitely worse places to live!

Thank you @Zinnia

@Mollyeyes it is very quiet so I suppose it depends what you're looking for from an area? As PP mentioned there is secretts with a lovely cafe and farm shop. Plus Godalming which is the closest town is lovely.
Ash Vale does have slightly more in terms of shops but there is nowhere that nice near by to go that is on a par with Godalming.
We actually lived in Godalming but moved to Ash Vale because we couldn't afford to buy there but still spend most weekends around there to see friends etc.
We're moving completely out of the area to another part of the country as want to be more rural 😀

Depends if you want to use the trains .... my sister lives there (Milford) and always seem to have train issues at Witley

Depends what you want with your life but I find it very sleepy .... great if you are into walking / running etc however not much happening.
Loads of nice pubs though - Inn on the lake dog and pheasant etc

Rodborough School - hmmmm
Lots of nice independents schools around 👍

@arthurdaly thank you and good luck with your onward home.
@Ilovechoc12 we love Godalming but can’t afford there nor farncombe so hence looked at Milford, ideally would have preferred somewhere less ‘sleepy’ but have to make some sacrifice, thank you for your advice, I hope the trains not delayed too often.

Milford is a very nice little place, but very sleepy. Too sleepy for me as we looked when looking around Godalming. (Have moved further out.)

But if you want to be close to Godalming (I don't actually like Farncombe) then it is a good compromise. The only issue sometimes can be the trains on the stopping service into London. If they are running behind schedule they do sometimes then not stop at places like Milford to make up the time which really then stuffs up people waiting for the stopper train which had been scheduled to stop at that station. The fast trains don't stop there at all.

Nice surrounding countryside. Nice pubs, I think a butcher and a hairdresser and not much else. But very close to Godalming is the trade off. I would much prefer Milford over Ash Vale personally.

friendlycat · 26/03/2021 16:34

I think Milford does also have a small co op type shop and obviously Secretts Garden Centre.

Zinnia · 26/03/2021 22:17

Milford does indeed have a Co-op! And a small Tesco, a butcher as PP mentioned, and a pharmacy. If you like Godalming it's a good choice I think, pleasant place to live and a nice community.

Thank you everyone, a little concerned regarding train problems though for Milford
