What's Market Harborough like for a young family and schools?

DH and I moved up to a new build development in East Northamptonshire (on the edge of Kettering) about 3.5 years ago from the outskirts of London to get onto the property ladder and get more for our money, i.e a detached house apposed to a flat and still be commutable to St Pancras in decent time. An hour on a train instead of 45/50 mins on a tube!! One of us is a full-time WFH and one still commutes but I'm sure there will be more WFH flexibility when there's a full return to office work.

We moved up pretty blind to where we live but it has worked out really well for us! Since moving up we have now grown and now have a DS that is 2 and we have another on the way and are looking at a potential move over to Market Harborough which is about 25 mins down the road from us as we look to get settled for when the primary school years come knocking...

What is Market Harbrough really like to live near/in? the town centre definetly looks nicer than our current one which we only go to for the station really and the station can feel a bit rough at times also!

What are the primary schools like and is there clubs such as swimming and football etc for the boys growing up to join?

Neither set of grandparents live close by as we are a northerner married to southerner who met in London. Neither of us are ready to give-up / change jobs just yet so have outruled the move to be closer to one set for the ease of having help on tap!

We also have a dog so love the idea of having more countryside on our door step.

Does Market Harborough tick the boxes of a nice place to live and for littleones to grow up? I would also consider villages on the outskirts but a need to get to the station for one of us will be a priority.

Thanks in advance to any recomendations or advice.

It’s right up your street! The schools are very good, with a secondary rated as outstanding. There’s a leisure centre with pool, rugby and football for youngsters, as well as dance and gymnastics clubs. It has lots of individual shops, coffee shops as well as well known supermarkets. The train station has direct trains to London in under 1hr.
The surrounding area has lovely countryside, canal walks, farm parks etc. There are also several nearby popular villages with great communities.

It's really nice and I know that before Covid it was somewhere my mum visited to do a bit of shopping and have a wander round.

There are some lovely villages nearby with beautiful countryside. I'm from Northamptonshire and of the towns it's probably the only one I'd want to live in.

Harborough and Kettering don't even compare, honestly if you are happy currently with Kettering market Harborough will seem dreamy! Are you looking to live in the town its self or the surrounding villages? There are lots of nice coffee shops and boutique independent shops in Harborough but also also some good chains, - joules, white stuff, monsoon, New look, etc. Just avoid the big new build estates to the South of the town in the farndon fields area, it's pretty over crowded there and built on a flood plain.

Thank you, after 3.5 years of living up this way we are still discovering the area and little hidden gems. Having a dog definitely helped with exploring...

Thank you! We didn't even drive through Kettering town centre before we moved up this way!!! I think we were blinkered by the fact we were actually getting our own house! If we did we probably wouldn't have moved :) joking aside our newbuild location is great for what we needed but now our priorities have changed and we just want to have more on our doorstep for the little ones and still have that access to London for one of us. We are actually looking at the new DWH development in the north part of MH which is closer to Great Bowden. Equally, we would be interested in the villages such as Great Bowden if something came up, as I'm from a village myself, but still we need to think about that drive to the station. We were thinking of going the other way to Thrapston which we use more than Kettering for hairdressers etc but weren't thrilled with the school options.

Also have a look at Kibworth. It has everything you’d find in a small town, but a village.

Aimz19 · 27/03/2021 21:03

Hi, sorry to hijack this post but if you know market Harborough you might know Lutterworth- what’s that like for a young family?

Maves · 28/03/2021 10:21

Harborough is awful now I moved to get away from it. Street fights/stabbing in the town centre at 4/5 o'clock, kids running riot destroying parks etc you're best off looking at the local newspaper online. There is a massive traveller presence in harborough and Lutterworth always trouble guns pulled on a teenager recently.

Everyone I know from harborough have said how bad it's got now. I moved so my kids didn't have to grow up there. They are also building thousands of houses so it's only going to get worse. It used to be lovely but you couldn't pay me to live there now.

Maves · 28/03/2021 10:23

And no to kibworth that's just as bad! Drug dog at the school, stabbings massive groups of youths causing shit all the time. Drugs,

Beebumble2 · 28/03/2021 10:31

Maves you obviously live in a parallel universe!

Aimz19 · 28/03/2021 11:17

What do you think about Lutterworth?

Maves · 28/03/2021 14:40

@Beebumble2 and you live in cloud cuckoo land?? Come on we know what harborough has turned into it's bad. Chinese students were attacked there when COVID started, people sitting in the pizza restaurant were egged, knife crime, drugs, violence....I spoke to a policeman last year and he said he'd had 3 jobs that day for fighting and antisocial behaviour in broad daylight in harbs.
Welland park was wrecked the other week thousands of pound worth of damage by a massive group of youths.
All the new trees were pulled up on little bowden park the other day. Let's not forget the massive group fights last summer that the police did nothing about. So yeah amazing place to bring kids up! You could stay in Northampton though and your kids could end up in one of the many London style gangs they have. The whole district is bad.
As for Lutterworth....just watch channel 4"s the truth about traveller crime there's your answer.

Maves · 28/03/2021 14:42

@Beebumble2 do you actually live in kibworth? You must know what goes on!! There's a 15 year old dealing drugs in broad daylight. Massive gatherings on Warwick rd park, stabbings. Weed smoking on every park broken glass, vandalism the police can't cope with it. Fleckney the same.

A Leicestershire Policece*_ spokesperson said: “Operation Behave will see one dedicated car patrol around Market Harborough district seven days a week from 8am to 11pm, which will run until the end of the summer holidays.
“The operation will coincide with the easing of lockdown restrictions on Monday April 12, when incidents in parks and open spaces are expected to rise, particularly due to the lighter evenings.

“The dedicated ‘ASB car’ will be patrolled by officers from Market Harboroughgh*_ who will be targeting areas where analysis has shown anti-social behaviour is a problem in the area, particularly last year.”
NPA Commander for Market Harborough, Inspector Siobhan Gorman, said they were committed to tackling ASB problems in the area.
