Hi!
Where is best to consider moving in Herefordshire?
Anyone able to advise whether this is a good move?
Would like to know what public transport is like, whether there's much going on, about levels of deprivation and crime, and whether you'd generally recommend it? If so, good well connected areas for a young family? Thanks! SmileDaffodil

Lol, no, it's not well connected anywhere in Herefordshire and public transport is abysmal, much the same as most rural areas. That said, Herefordshire has some of the most beautiful countryside, towns, architecture and food and drink in the country.

Ledbury is the place for you. Walking distance to train station...connected to everywhere in the world.

Ok Birmingham, but from there, yeah, the world's your oyster...

Well connected areas of Herefordshire:

  1. Err.
  2. Have you thought about Worcester?

There is a main line from Paddington which calls at Worcester, Malvern, Colwall, Ledbury and Hereford if memory of the announcment serves.

Lovely rural county but not well-off I'd say, especially in the towns/cities.
Whether it's a good move for you depends on what you want really and your budget, it's hard to be any more help from your OP details.

I lived in Hereford in the 80s, and thought it beautiful. We go back regularly now. It's changed a great deal since then, with the former cattle market having given way to a shopping area and some restaurants. Consequently, for me at least it would be much more liveable now, without having to take the train to Worcester, Shrewsbury or Birmingham when you need stuff that's slightly out of the ordinary. There's also much more to do in Hereford now than there was then.

As for connections, there's a train service via Worcester to Birmingham, although don't expect it to be too frequent as the last bit to Hereford is single track. You can also get to Shrewsbury via Ludlow, which is an interesting foodie town with a great vibe. You could also look at Ledbury or Leominster.

Nothing in Herefordshire is particularly easy or quick to get to, but for me that just add to its charm. It's a beautiful county, full of mellow landscapes and unexpected treasures. It takes a while to settle in, but I think it would be worth it.

The train from Hereford to Birmingham is every hour, however Hereford is a through road with no bypass so major traffic problems with only one river crossing
