Neighbour spreading rumours

Have posted similar before, backstory we cut down conifers in our garden (yes definitely our trees and not on the boundary, at the bottom of our garden nowhere near neighbour) spoilt his view though apparently. He’s since grown his own conifers on the boundary.
It’s come to my attention that the neighbour is now insinuating /spreading rumours that I damage his car when I park/turn in the road/reverse. I noticed that when I park he will go out to inspect his vehicle. Or he will come out whilst I’m parking and stare at me, watch me from the window etc. He emerged from behind a hedge today.
I’ve never touched his car! DH thinks he’s losing the plot and to just laugh it off. I’m concerned our other neighbours might think I’m an erratic driver and may damage their cars. We are quite spaced out and no one really talks to each other, but it’s not a comfortable feeling to feel like I’m being watched and see him there, staring. I’m aware he’s probably said something to his nearest neighbour as he now parks as close to their drive way as humanely possible, meaning they have problems parking. It takes them multiple attempts to park.
What would you do?
Ignore
Confront him (though he will deny)
Copy him (another DH suggestionHmm smile and wave at him)
Speak to the other neighbours (but then do I look like the rumour spreader?)

WWYD?!

I'd smile and wave! Once he realises that his intimidating presence doesn't bother you one bit he'll stop eventually. Kill with kindness.

Get a dash cam front and rear.
Dont confront him, just ignore.
These types LOVE it if you confront/ argue with them so they can spread more gossip.

BluePheasant · 18/03/2021 22:36

Yes I think DH is right, smile and wave! It will catch him off guard and make him the uncomfortable one. Easier said than done though!

Babyfg · 18/03/2021 22:37

Definitely smile and wave. When he next emerges from a hedge say something like oh I've heard there was a peeping Tom about from some of the neighbours you scared me, then he can cack his pants about what the neighbours might be saying about him (said in the kindest, friendliest way possible!

I'd go with the dash cams. For the sheer fact, if his car did get damaged he'd be coming your way first. You can get ones that if you car gets hit it starts to record even if parked. And then I would also go with the peeping tom gossip just for fun to make him think

🤣that made me chuckle! Yes thank you @Templetree a dash cam is definite proof that I haven’t touched his car. I keep expecting a knock on the door from the police saying I’ve hit it. Wait until I tell DH is suggestion has been voted the best! Not sure I can deal with the smugness tonight! In all honesty I hope it doesn’t escalate, when we moved here we got on quite well. We don’t have parties, stay up late, play music etc. He just has this ongoing obsession about our bloody trees! Thanks all, feeling a bit better about the situation.
