What to replace conifers with?

I have two huge conifers that are taking up half my garden and overhanging next doors garden. The neighbour is going to cut them down. (Very happy as it'll save me a mint) The garden will look very bare without them. What can I replace them with, something low maintenance and ok for cats.

Photo? Sun or shade? are you a keen gardener or hands off? how high do you need them to go? evergreen or bare in the winter? the soil where you've taken them out will be very depleted and ideally you need to invest in getting the stumps taken out if at all possible, but at the very least need them ground well down and plant stuff in-between them.

Are they taking them right out or just topping them so they stay but at a lower level? Like 6foot high or something? If you trimmed the thickness back as well as the height it may work out ok, like a hedge of a manageable height?

Can't find a photo. It's a north facing garden. So not much sun. I have no idea if they are going to leave the stumps. Will they re grow if they do that? I'm not a fan of gardening at all. Just want something that would t make it look bare.

Presumably they have a reason they want shot of the conifers? More sunlight perhaps?

If they just cut the conifers down a bit then it leaves you with a six foot privacy conifer hedge and also allows them the sun in their garden or whatever it is they want.

Perhaps that’s the way to go?

If they remove the whole lot they may well leave the stumps, as they need dug out and it will take longer and therefore cost more.

The other thing I’ve seen done with conifers is to take all the foliage off them so they are tree trunks only but leave a few feet worth of conifer at the top. Like a row of toothpicks with a blob of broccoli on top!! Then you can wind solar fairy lights round the trunks and put up some trellis (perhaps the ones with fake ivy on them) or something else like bamboo for a bit of privacy. Affix to the trunks. Then you don’t need to worry about what to fix the trellis onto. Trying to dig holes in the ground to put fence posts into is hard work when there are old trees roots everywhere under the ground!

I've no idea what they are planning to do with them. They are huge and overhanging g his garden, and he wants to do the fence. I probably would have got rid of them anyway. Might just get some pots instead.

Conifers dont grow back once they are cut back so will look very ugly if they are cut back hard.
Are they in your garden or next door? Best to talk to your neighbour and agree a plan.

My next door neighbours 20 foot high conifers were cut back to 7foot. A few years later they are back at 20 foot again! So they do grow back!

Toddlerteaplease · 17/03/2021 21:56

They've gone. My garden now looks
I have bigger I didn't realise there were actually 3 of them. The roots have been left as it was going to cost more. And it's saved me Loads of money so I'm not complaining! He's going to finish off the fence As well. My cats are very puzzled!

Most conifers wont regrow if cut into dead wood and nothing will come from those stumps.
You probably wont get much to grow around them if the stumps remain but you could add large planters. Enjoy the light.
