My neighbours hate my wood burner.

We are in a cul de sac of detached bungalows.
My wood burner was fitted last Autumn and at the moment we are using it a lot and we love it.

But the neighbours says it creating dust which lands on their cars.

Is this a possibility?

To the best of my knowledge it's all properly fitted, it came from a reputable local company. If it's dropping dust on my car I wouldn't notice. I've got an old Fiesta that's on its last legs. I work full time. The neighbours work at home and polish their lovely cars a lot.

Can you get filters?
Maybe it's just because it's been super windy?
Does your wood burner make dust?

Remember there are still many places without a gas connection. I live in one. We don't get any dust but our chimneys are all high.

That includes all fires doesn’t it? It’s a lot to Wade through on Mother’s Day. Are you able to C&P the specific part about kiln dried wood in log burners please?

Logoff · 14/03/2021 16:27

I can only find this which would include everything from pizza ovens to fire pits.

My neighbours hate my wood burner.
Nightbear · 14/03/2021 16:28

I’m not talking about the impact on the environment, I’m talking about the impact on health. Very few people have a plane in their living room and we already know that living by busy roads is detrimental to the health of children in particular because of the pollution from diesel vehicles. Willingly putting a source of air pollution into your home is just bizarre.

Brokenrecord3006 · 14/03/2021 16:29

I live in an area where most houses have wood burners or open fires, all the chimneys are chuffing away through the winter. It's the only source of heat for a lot of people so I do hope they aren't banned. We'd freeze.

The smell outside isn't bad and is quite subtle (nothing like a bonfire), cars don't get dusty and I highly doubt cats stink of smoke. I think your neighbours are being a bit silly.

Babygotblueyes · 14/03/2021 16:31

When I lived in the states we had regular 'spare the air' days when people were not allowed to light these because of the stuff they send out. I read you can get filters for them, dont know how much they filter out though. I have not heard of dust on the cars being an issue if they work properly, but do notice it in my chest if my neighbour has had theirs on.

PradaBallbag · 14/03/2021 16:32

@pursuedbyablackdog

The problem with wood burners is people put all sorts of shite in them and don't burn them hot enough. Our old neighbours used to burn tin cans on them because they supposedly 'clean' the chimney (absolute bullocks) the smell was awful. We have new neighbours now and they burn apple and cherry wood (smells lovely). Our new neighbours are really decent people though Smile
Not everyone burns shite in woodburners. I agree that that's anti social. We only burn seasoned and dried wood.
FurierTransform · 14/03/2021 16:34

Emissions/pollution debate aside, a domestic log burner or even an open fire shouldn't be creating dust sufficient to fall noticeably on neighbouring cars... the neighbours could have just made that up though & actually just don't like it because of the smell.

Light it in the daytime & observe the chimney for excessive smoke.

BobsDouble · 14/03/2021 16:35

Ours certainly makes dust inside, and we only burn dry seasoned wood.

Chuckitout · 14/03/2021 16:35

They're right, the sooner these things are banned properly regulated the better.

All the work that's been done, first with smokeless fuels to get rid if smog and then with lower polluting cars and now people are allowed to burn whatever they please and polute their neighbourhoods.

It depends what you're burning of course and well seasoned logs will help matters but yes, we get ash on the cars and the washing smells of smoke if it's been on the line.

Having a wood burner is really inconsiderate IMO.

Looneytune253 · 14/03/2021 16:35

My ndn has an outdoor wood burner which he used to only use at night. I hate it. He now also uses it on sunny days and I can't put washing out and I hate it!!

Luvacuppatea · 14/03/2021 16:39

I honestly think that wood burners / open fires should be banned. Disgusting, polluting, stinky things!

goingtotown · 14/03/2021 16:43

My house reeks of smoke from my neighbours wood burner.

midsomermurderess · 14/03/2021 16:47

They do seem to cause quite a lot of pollution, according to this article in the Guardian: woodturner pollution

Chimoia · 14/03/2021 16:47

Even my 80 year old Dad who used to burn anything and everything reads the papers and isn't going to use the wood burning stove in his new house.

Chuckitout · 14/03/2021 16:50

So now you know OP, are you going to stop?

murbblurb · 14/03/2021 16:51

Tricky, with oil being more polluting ( and can't be grown in the garden) and electric heating prohibitively expensive both to install and run.

I hope no one complaining has an outdoor firepit, chimney or the ultimate abhorrence, a patio heater.

braceletsandbangles · 14/03/2021 16:51

You people are so funny Grin

We have a multi fuel stove that heats the whole (tiny) house.

Neighbours didn't even realised we'd had one installed, until I told them. At that point it had been permanently burning for 3 months.

You can't see smoke coming out of a chimney when one is fuelled correctly. There's definitely no smell either.

Thank you for giving me a good giggle with all of the ridiculous over reacting. I so needed that today. Flowers

mimi0708 · 14/03/2021 16:58

@braceletsandbangles well just because you are not experiencing it, it doesn't mean people are overreacting. There are people who are actually experiencing health issues because of the pollution and smoke coming from wood burning

Zebracat · 14/03/2021 17:03

My friend, not in the U.K. has just been diagnosed with Copd after 3 years of living in a house with a wood burner as the only source of heat. I love them, but I wouldn’t have one. It really isn’t about virtue signalling, they cause serious respiratory problems.

So mature; coming onto a thread to "have a good giggle" at all the posters you don't agree with, having no other argument to offer. Harmless enough though, I suppose...
PradaBallbag · 14/03/2021 17:15

God there's a lot of hysteria on this thread.

Benjispruce2 · 14/03/2021 17:19

Pizza ovens and fire pits or chimeneas are not generally used daily.

Nanny0gg · 14/03/2021 17:20

@HollyBerryTree

Definitely no smell. Used a registered installer.

I've messaged him to come and take a look and sweep the chimney.
I don't think the wood has got damp but will check.

Possibly atmospheric conditions aren't helping.

They are lovely to own and a menace to everyone else.

The stink from next door's comes into my house. And it's very, very bad for people with lung conditions.

You're very welcome.

Idiot.
