My neighbours hate my wood burner.

We are in a cul de sac of detached bungalows.
My wood burner was fitted last Autumn and at the moment we are using it a lot and we love it.

But the neighbours says it creating dust which lands on their cars.

Is this a possibility?

To the best of my knowledge it's all properly fitted, it came from a reputable local company. If it's dropping dust on my car I wouldn't notice. I've got an old Fiesta that's on its last legs. I work full time. The neighbours work at home and polish their lovely cars a lot.

Can you get filters?
Maybe it's just because it's been super windy?
Does your wood burner make dust?

The ash from a log burner settles at the bottom of the burner, very little, if any, goes up the flue.

I just think the OP's neighbours are, as previously said, jealous, or they're simply nit-picking. Cars collect also of dust, dirt and crime from simply sitting outside, the OP cannot be blamed for that![/quote]
3 burners in the cul de sac, all with metal chimneys and my black car is covered in flakes of white ash from September to about March. It’s not a coincidence. The house next door sits higher than ours and the other 2 are opposite but at the same level.

They wouldn’t know about it as they are otherwise good neighbours but it’s annoying at times and clearly not as lovely for everyone else as it is for them.

Quite timely, although it's from 2012 someone I know just shared this really interesting article: samharris.org/the-fireplace-delusion/

I just noticed the horrible smell in my house again, looked outside and lo and behold, my neighbour's wood burner is belching out thick black smoke once again, caught by the strong winds, away from their house and directly towards mine.

Surely it cant be legal. It looks like an exhaust on a clapped out diesel van!

If you can see black smoke coming from it then they’re not burning the right fuel. You can report this if you live in a smokeless zone I believe.

Black smoke - what the hell are they burning?

As for the article - recreational woodburning is bad, so no campfires, firepits etc etc for anyone complaining about woodburners. Or barbecues of course, you have a kitchen. Woodburner not lit here tonight, oil fired heating on...

That's a very interesting article and of course, he's right.

There are no smoke controlled zones in my borough.

I suspect my neighbours burn anything and everything. I know for a fact they dont buy wood bricks or similar, they just keep scavenged wood in the greenhouse (where it's moist!)

Chumleymouse · 16/03/2021 22:16

If it’s black smoke he ain’t burnin wood ! Probably a car tyre or a few lumps of tar. Or like you say maybe he’s burning diesel on it ?

You won't get away with burning just anything after 2022.
We chop and stack our wood for at least a year in a dry shed open to air circulation. We also have a lined chimney so little clinker ?if that's the right word, collects.

I've no idea but the smoke was white/pale grey at lunchtime so we'll see. Hopefully it'll be turned off soon now that Spring is almost here.

Oh, if it's white smoke I think it means your neighbours have selected a new Pope.

I have a wood burner. I don’t like it much because of the dust and the smell. My neighbours don’t like my cats and have poured anti freeze into their outside water bowls and glued spikes onto the adjoining walls. 2 of my cats have been injured and died due to my neighbours behaviours. My neighbour has 2 shiny Porsche cars plus they put their tumble dryer vent through a window that they leave open for this purpose. Every time I see the cars out and window open I go and light the wood burner and I use paper that turns interesting tiny black flakes. I like to do this when the cars are freshly washed and damp or if I see them go out fort the dar leaving their window open. I won’t be walked on
Yikes ! This sounds crazy. How can you live like this ? Move house.
TildaKauskumholm · 17/03/2021 23:16

I can't believe they are permitted in built up areas, seems like a very poor decision to allow them.

Not for much longer I bet, they cause massive amounts of pollution and it's really starting to hit the headlines now as a middle class smog scourge, worse than driving your kids to school in a diesel 4WD. I wouldn't be surprised if they are banned in the next 3-5 years.

Barney60 · 18/03/2021 12:19

I love the look of a wood burner, but dislike the smoke they create, my neighbour has one i. We have to shut windows fetch washing in when ever they light it, but to me they are not as bad as bar- be ques, which i hate!

Suzi888 · 18/03/2021 22:41

Ours has an open fire and our windowsills get covered in black soot. I wouldn’t complain though, not worth the hassle!

AlwaysLatte · 21/04/2021 23:59

We don't get much smoke. Our logs are mostly from trees we've had to chop or prune, and they are properly seasoned and kept dry. If you are buying them in then maybe try a different supplier or use a damp probe to check they're not wet?

ceilingsand · 22/04/2021 00:14

I'd be gutted if my neighbour got one, as I have a lung condition.

The oddest comment here is that the neighbour is complaining because they are jealous. I can’t imagine anyone I know being jealous of something like neighbours having a crappy wood burning stove.
