My neighbours hate my wood burner.

We are in a cul de sac of detached bungalows.
My wood burner was fitted last Autumn and at the moment we are using it a lot and we love it.

But the neighbours says it creating dust which lands on their cars.

Is this a possibility?

To the best of my knowledge it's all properly fitted, it came from a reputable local company. If it's dropping dust on my car I wouldn't notice. I've got an old Fiesta that's on its last legs. I work full time. The neighbours work at home and polish their lovely cars a lot.

Can you get filters?
Maybe it's just because it's been super windy?
Does your wood burner make dust?

Is it fitted properly? Lined chimney, flue etc and are you burning only smokeless coal or seasoned wood?

If the answer to these is yes, then no it wouldn’t be happening. If the answer is no, then yes it could be causing some issues.

I suspect they just don’t like them though so looking for a reason.

user1471530109 · 14/03/2021 13:10

I have no idea but do know you can get different fuels for them? Is it a multifuel stove?

I'd absolutely love one but cant afford it don't think I'd use it as an everyday thing? And only when it was really cold. I've had one in the past in my first house and we only lit it on special occasions like Christmas Grin. They aren't very good for the environment so I'd feel too guilty using it regularly.

dementedpixie · 14/03/2021 13:12

Our neighbour has one. It stinks. My cats come in and you can smell the smoke on their fur

Floralnomad · 14/03/2021 13:13

If dust on their car is the only issue then I’d ignore it . I would dislike it if my neighbours had a wood burner because they really affect my emphysema .

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 14/03/2021 13:14

Hahahahah dust on their cars, how can they tell it's woodburner dust? What do they expect to have on their cars if they are not garaged. Do they have hysterics everytime it rains on them too - we must stop nature immediately.
I had a woodburner for 20 years and the bungalow next doot never complained of dust on their car, they had a woodburner too.

Chihuahuacat · 14/03/2021 13:15

Are you burning the right logs? We’re in a smoke controlled area and have to buy proper kiln dried logs to reduce the smoke.

Ifailed · 14/03/2021 13:15

It shouldn't be producing any dust out of the chimney, if you are burning kiln-dried logs. Was the installer HETAS registered, and is stove Defra approved?

Midlifephoenix · 14/03/2021 13:17

Is your chimney lined? I can only think it os dislodging soit already in there if you didn't clean or line it before (though I'm surprised the ibstalkers didn't do this if not).
I have one i use daily in winter for last 8 years and nothing on my car and no complaints. Now my neighbours weekly bon fires though...

Midlifephoenix · 14/03/2021 13:17

Soot, obviously.

fivelemons · 14/03/2021 13:18

I loathe my neighbour's wood burner, and we have had to put up with the nuisance for years. The smoke from it absolutely stinks and when they have the fire going, even though all our windows are closed, we can still smell it. It is absolutely vile.

Etulosba · 14/03/2021 13:20

We are surrounded by houses with open fires and wood burning stoves. I haven't noticed any difference in the level of dust on our cars during the winter or summer.

RubyViolet · 14/03/2021 13:22

I love wood burners, l can’t have one as l have asthma. There are evenings when the weather conditions are such that my breathing is laboured from the wood burning smoke where l live. I don’t know what causes it but the smoke seems to sit and not drift away, it happens maybe 6 times a year.
If you were to be outside you could see the smoke in front of you at ground level, atmospheric pressure ??? Maybe this is happening where you are.

SirVixofVixHall · 14/03/2021 13:23

Wood burners in towns and cities are a major health hazzard. Wood smoke is incredibly carcinogenic, can cause asthma attacks, and woodburners are now a major cause of pollution in parts of London . www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/dec/18/wood-burners-triple-harmful-indoor-air-pollution-study-finds
I have one, it was in my house when I moved in, I love a real fire but we use it very rarely as even in my rural village the number of people burning fuel causes smog to build up and gives me a tight chest.

SirVixofVixHall · 14/03/2021 13:24

I am in the same situation as RubyViolet
About time the clean air act was reinforced.

Lumene · 14/03/2021 13:24

Do you enjoy it enough to compensate for the health risks?

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jan/01/avoid-using-wood-burning-stoves-if-possible-warn-health-experts

Your neighbours may be concerned about the secondary health impacts on them.

Lumene · 14/03/2021 13:24

Cross post!

HollyBerryTree · 14/03/2021 13:26

Definitely no smell. Used a registered installer.

I've messaged him to come and take a look and sweep the chimney.
I don't think the wood has got damp but will check.

Possibly atmospheric conditions aren't helping.

redcandlelight · 14/03/2021 13:26

woodburners in dwellings close to neighbours are a nuisance and antisocial and their pollutants are very bad for health. I'm not surprised your neighbours are not happy about it.

I don't think it would leave visible dust on cars though

SirVixofVixHall · 14/03/2021 13:27

I remember reading somewhere that one woodburner kicks out as much pollution as a street full of cars . It is sad as they are lovely, but they are really unhealthy indoors, particularly for children and also for people living near you.

Gottalovesummer · 14/03/2021 13:28

They are extremely anti social.

Our neighbours have theirs on constantly and we can't hang out washing or even keep our windows open as it stinks.

Nice for you.

Awful for your neighbours.

SoupDragon · 14/03/2021 13:28

Mine too!

I love the smell of woodsmoke so it doesn't bother me. I find it odd that the cats smell of it though.

WeatherwaxLives · 14/03/2021 13:28

We have a wodburner as do many of our neighbours. You can tell when someone has lit their fire as you can smell it when you go outside, so I'm sure there must be some dust/ash being carried into the air which presumably falls and settles somewhere.

Daphnise · 14/03/2021 13:28

Anti social people have wood burners and pollute the atmosphere with smells and dust.

Do you have a trampoline as well?

Bmidreams · 14/03/2021 13:28

They're such a backward move for the environment.

Etulosba · 14/03/2021 13:33

Do you have a trampoline as well?

And go on holiday in an aeroplane?
