Where to live in the Lakes?

Hi!
Need some advice on where to move in/around the Lake District.
Me and hubbie are about to have our first baby.
We'd like somewhere well connected by public transport as I don't drive due to bad health. So near a large town/city, but not in the thick of it? Good schools, ideally not deprived.
Does this sound possible in this area, or is it too rural? I've heard good things about Penrith..?

Why are you moving there ? It's a large area, so the end you want to be at depends on what you are there for

I'm from the lakes, Penrith didn't used to be desirable if I'm being honest. I think Kendal and the surrounding areas are a good safe bet, if you go nearer to the actual lakes you'll be looking at a lot more money to purchase. X

Transport isn’t great most places without a car.
You need to be at least on the edge of a bigger town to get regular buses etc.
So Penrith, Kendal, Ulverston. Barrow/Carlisle/West coast are more deprived although there are nice areas within them.
