What does the red dial mean on electric meter?

I know you don’t include it in the meter reading but I can’t find online what the red dial actually means on our analogue electricity meter. The number it points to changes daily (I’m currently taking readings due to hideous bills) and wondered if anyone could enlighten me

Is it not just a fraction of the number e.g. like the seconds hand of a clock? So it whirs round and when it does a full revolution the meter reading increases by 1

Without seeing your meter (post a pic?) I can't say for sure, but normally it's just the tenth dial.

Supplier normally only wants the whole numbers, so you might report 1234 kWh.

Meter may actually be reading 1234.8 kWh - the .8 is the red dial (normally).

It usually says on the meter? Something like www.diydoctor.org.uk/project_images/electric-meter/dial-meter-dials.jpg

(note the small 1/10 next to the red dial)

If that’s the case it doesn’t move while I’m looking at it so certainly not whirring

OK maybe not whirring but it moves round and then once it goes right round the dial on the one next to it will go up 1

Yes that is how our looks thanks. Just weird as I’d have expected to be able to see it move. Maybe I need to stand (in the rain!) longer Smile
