Neighbour’s house

Greensidepark · 11/03/2021 21:23

The house adjoining mine is suffering from damp (please see picture of hallway) and it is starting to affect adjoining areas of my house. The tenant living there just moved out as the owners have refused to fix it.

Is there anything I can do to compel them to fix it? Report to Council or get lawyers involved. Any advice welcome please. Thanks

Contact your house insurance and say the neighbour property is affecting yours.
Our neighbours garage roof affected our garage & insurance sent surveyor to inspect & sent a report to their insurance. It was sorted quickly an we didn’t have to do anything. I imagine if they can sort a garage they can get their insurance to sort to prevent further damage to your house.

Contact environmental health at your local council.

And council too, did the tenant not contact the council over it?

Greensidepark · 11/03/2021 22:13

Thanks for all the responses. I only found out as the tenant was moving out and I asked why. They did not contact the council.

I’ve had suggestions to look at the roof and guttering, but the tenant did say that the whole house is affected.

Looks more than just damp. I'd get your insurance involved. Your neighbour won't be able to re let it though, so maybe they will actually do something!

Home insurance won't do anything if it's damp. Home insurance doesn't cover damp. They would only do something if it's something covered on your policy (then they would claim it back off the neighbour's policy)

That looks like something is leaking. Is it near next door's bathroom?

Greensidepark · 13/03/2021 12:08

Yes there’s a bathroom above that ceiling. But they have this all over the house.
