home buyers or builders survey

Just had an offer accepted on a late 1960's house. Although it's been fairly well looked after, it still has the original back boiler, roof and wiring (although the fuse board has been replaced). We're considering remodelling the room layout downstairs, and possibly extending.

With all this in mind I though it would be best to get a full building survey done, however the surveyor has come back to say that the building survey is for properties of 120 years old or more. Should we just go for the homebuyers report, or insist on getting a full builders report. We're first time buyers so might just be overly worrying about the condition, but it's only a £150 difference between the two so a relatively small amount in the scheme of things.

Homebuyers reports should still be pretty thorough and will pick up on any obvious structural defects with the property. Regardless of what survey you choose, there'll inevitably be something that gets missed, and something that gets over exaggerated. I'd be guided by the surveyor, personally.
