If you’ve switched from gas to induction hob...

...would you recommend it? Or do you hate it and want to switch back?

Designing a kitchen and got to start thinking about hobs - I always thought I wanted gas but definitely prefer the look of induction. But don’t want to be swayed by looks over functionality!

I have induction now. As long as you treat it like a gas hob when you cook, it's fine . It's if you think of it as a slow to heat and slow to cool down electric that you come unstuck. It's so easy to clean I won't ever go back to gas now.

BorisandHarriet · 18/02/2021 07:18

It’s brilliant. I can’t imagine anything else. Instant heat. No risk of burning yourself on either a flame or a boiling hot electric ring. So easy to clean.

MonsterKidz · 18/02/2021 07:18

Hate it for cooking.
Love it for cleaning.

Flaunch · 18/02/2021 07:20

Love everything about it and would never go back. Ours is amazing for cooking on - it’s the neff one with the removable knob

billybagpuss · 18/02/2021 07:21

It took a few days (and shiny new pans) to get used to it. But I love it now and wouldn’t go back, safer and easier to clean, we have a Miele one. We had one on holiday once and I hated that one which put me off wanting one but glad I did.

RMRM · 18/02/2021 07:22

I love induction, so much better than gas, especially for cleaning. Worth investing in a good quality one.

IsolaPribby · 18/02/2021 07:22

I have had mine about 15 years, and have always loved it. Functionality is brilliant, but I would advise not to go for a cheap one.
They do look brilliant, and are Soo easy to clean.
I have noticed that the majority of TV chefs and cookery programs now use induction.

Whynotnowbaby · 18/02/2021 07:24

I love ours, just frustrating when I realise one of the old pans doesn’t work on it!

Franke · 18/02/2021 07:24

What MonsterKidz said. I really miss gas for cooking. I don't know if my hob is defective or my pots are defective but it doesn't cook evenly and is not reactive. I have trouble leaving things on a gentle simmer and it takes ages to heat things up. If I could have gas I would, even with the cleaning issue.

Here's a recent thread on the same subject that got quite a few answers.

Personally I like the security of having a second heating source if the electrics fail.

Flamingolingo · 18/02/2021 07:27

Had induction installed in old house, loved it (didnt’t go straight from gas, from halogen, but obviously have had gas in other houses). It’s a really easy was y to cook and fabulous to keep clean. For me it was the safety features with small children. Our hob had a detachable part that made it impossible to operate when removed.

5 years later, moved to current house, with poor quality gas hob. Hated it. A few things were a bit easier to cook, but I was back to having dry hands (I think from being above the flame when cooking), and had all the chaos of pans sliding on the rings, horrid to clean etc. Did our kitchen last year and put induction into this house too. Back to loving it.

Serious chefs will tell you that gas is the best, but although I’m a keen and adventurous cook I would say that gas is entirely unnecessary for most households. Other bonus is that it doesn’t require a separate installation visit from a gas engineer.

baxterstockman · 18/02/2021 07:28

Yes love ours too. DH is the main cook here and is a total Luddite. For the first few days all I heard was beeping and swearing coming from the kitchen, but once he mastered it he was a convert!

Thecatisboss · 18/02/2021 07:28

Old house had gas which I loved. Moved to house with electric hob which was awful, had kitchen refit and DH convinced me that induction was brilliant as he'd seen one at a friend's house. It's a neff hob with removable knob and it is great to cook on and easy to c!ean.

Autumnpumpkin · 18/02/2021 07:34

We have one and we absolutely love it. Its fab for cooking on, it's so convenient. Heats up really quick. So simple to clean you just wipe over it. Ours is a rangemaster range cooker with induction hob which means when it's not in use and I'm making things like pack ups/picnics we have extra work space too. Can't recommend highly enough, I'll never go back to gas.

SerialRelocator · 18/02/2021 07:37

Love our induction hob. Wouldn't go back to gas.

TheBiscuitStrikesBack · 18/02/2021 07:41

I got induction when the kitchen was refitted and absolutely hated it. That hob stopped working so I replaced with a new and more expensive hob (was on offer) and it is amazing.

Don’t scrimp and buy a Cooke and Lewis one! The power output is rubbish.

MaryIsA · 18/02/2021 07:41

I cook a lot and love induction, I think some are better than others. But ours wasn’t particularly expensive but very responsive. Great to clean too.

We’ve gone back to gas in a new house. Can’t wait to change it to induction.

SimonJT · 18/02/2021 07:45

I hate it, the heat isn’t even and it doesn’t maintain heat well enough for deep frying, so now when I make samosas etc I use a portable gas stove.

GwendolineWindowlene · 18/02/2021 07:46

Do they get scratched? DP does that wanky chef thing of yanking pans backwards and forwards rather than just stirring stuff.

Flaunch · 18/02/2021 07:50

I’ve managed to scratch mine with a cast iron pot but you can’t really see it and it still works fine. You’re not supposed to use cast iron on the so it’s my own fault. I don’t think it’s be possible to scratch them with decent saucepans.

devildeepbluesea · 18/02/2021 07:52

I moved into a house with one. Much, much, much prefer gas. It does clean well though.

boobot1 · 18/02/2021 07:55

Hate it, much prefer gas.

notacooldad · 18/02/2021 07:56

I love the induction hob.
Ours cracked. - DHs fault he dropped a spice pot on it from height.
I am going to replace it with an induction with a gas ring. Best of both worlds!

TierFourTears · 18/02/2021 07:58

Ours was a rental. It had 9 choices which boiled down to 2 settings: furious or pathetic. It randomly switched off mid cook. Often beeped at me to express annoyance. I hated the thing.
It was easy to clean.

Melange99 · 18/02/2021 07:58

I don't cook but when we had our kitchen done my OH wanted an induction hob and he loves it.
