If you’ve switched from gas to induction hob...

...would you recommend it? Or do you hate it and want to switch back?

Designing a kitchen and got to start thinking about hobs - I always thought I wanted gas but definitely prefer the look of induction. But don’t want to be swayed by looks over functionality!

Love mine. It works with my hood. The light and fan comes in automatically when I turn on the hob. Such a good gimmick

Ginfordinner · 18/02/2021 07:59

How good are they for stir frying?

Lunaballoon · 18/02/2021 08:08

I occasionally cook on an open flame on my gas hop - blackening aubergines and peppers in order to remove the skins or flashing flat breads/naans over the flame to give them a bit of smokiness. I don’t think I’d be able to replicate that on an induction hob.

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/02/2021 08:10

You need to make sure you have enough excess power capacity in your home. I have one and have no issues with it. DPIL have one and it can't cope properly with more than two rings on. It will take power from one ring to push power to each additional ring (IYSWIM). Electrician has said its a capacity issue which is common with induction hobs.

userxx · 18/02/2021 08:13

@GwendolineWindowlene

Do they get scratched? DP does that wanky chef thing of yanking pans backwards and forwards rather than just stirring stuff.

🤣🤣 this really made me laugh. My boyfriend does the same, it's so over the top and shit ends up all over the place. Just stir FFS !

TheFancyPants · 18/02/2021 08:21

Went from Gas (which I loved!) to induction and will never go back now!

Better, as top gets cooler quicker, so safe with small people, and great as in I have a habit of forgetting to turn gas off.

I can now put a pan of water on, get it to a fast boil, add pasta, lower heat to 7 and put timer on for 10 minutes. I can then go off and do something else knowing the pasta will be cooked perfectly with no over boil, and the timer will turn it off. Cant do this with gas can I?!!!

Oh and a cinch to clean!!

Frazzled2207 · 18/02/2021 08:28

Generally love it but

  1. As pp has said it can cause problems if your wiring it not up to it. Our house is 100 years old Tbf. Until the sparky sorted it it couldn’t cope with more than 2 on at the same time.
  2. Ours (Electrolux) has the annoying quirk that if anything gets on the control panel (even a splash of cooking juice ) the whole thing shuts down. Apparently some safety feature but very annoying. It does beep at you when it’s about to do it though. Check this quirk out before you choose one.
MyCatHatesOtherCats · 18/02/2021 08:34

Lots of love for induction, then! They do seem a bit marmite... I am concerned about losing the gas because it wouldn’t be easy to get it put in if I felt I’d made a huge mistake, if you see what I mean.

The safety features are a huge advantage as it will be on a breakfast bar and we have kids.

What kind of pans do you need for one? (Please don’t say I have to get rid of my Le Creuset...)

Yes they scratch very easily, you also have to polish out watermarks or they leave a permanent stain. They crack very easily as well, ours has a significant chip on the edge where a Sainsburys herb pot was knocked over (so nothing heavy or from height), it also has a large crack from a whisk toppling out of a pan due to being top heavy.
MaryIsA · 18/02/2021 08:40

Ours didn’t scratch or mark, and I’m pretty heavy handed.

Le creuset is fine on it.

endoflevelbaddy · 18/02/2021 08:40

Hate it. New house had a very old halogen hob that wouldn't even turn on for me (DH could get it on). Swapped it out in the first week for an induction but I will go back to gas when I renovate the kitchen.

It beeps incessantly, doesn't like being wiped, scratched first time I used it, regularly won't respond to my touch, and doesn't seem to be capable of a simmer - anything below 5 (0-9 + P for a surge of heat) does nothing.

If you're choosing I'd go gas every time.

Roselilly36 · 18/02/2021 08:46

Induction hob is not recommended should you have a pacemaker. But heard great things about them from friends that have induction hobs & love them.

greeceiwwhereimdreamingof · 18/02/2021 08:46

following op, can anyone recommend a good make for an adventurous cook?

Frazzled2207 · 18/02/2021 08:48

It’s aluminium based pans that won’t work. Le creuset is fine.

Notonthestairs · 18/02/2021 08:53

Once I'd replaced most of my pans 🙄 I loved it.

Replaced gas Hob with induction Hob. My existing pans were supposed to be induction friendly but getting them to boil was often impossible - the Hob would turn itself off!

Eventually was given a le cresuet 3 ply pan and realised it worked much, much better - saved and replaced all pans with the same.

Now it works brilliantly.

Cleaning is a doddle, just a wipe over with damp cloth, no scratches over 3.5 years.

Ifailed · 18/02/2021 08:55

from what I can gather, induction hobs are great if you obsess about cleanliness and just want to heat things up.

partyatthepalace · 18/02/2021 08:55

I hated induction, delighted to be back to gas

They switch themselves off constantly - it’s infuriating. And the temperature is not as easy to control.

Newpuppymummy · 18/02/2021 08:56

I got one in my new kitchen last year and I love it. I would never go back. It wasn’t particularly expensive either

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 18/02/2021 08:58

I love our induction hob, very reactive and easy to clean. Test your pans out, so if a magnet sticks then they'll work on induction. When we switched all of mine still worked, inc the le cruset.

Notonthestairs · 18/02/2021 08:59

I liked the safety aspect - cools down quickly and has a warning red hand to show it's still cooling down - I taught my child with Learning difficulties to watch out for that.

And if you leave it on but without pans on it gives you a warning beep and turns itself off,

PatriciaValiant · 18/02/2021 08:59

Love our induction hob

SisterWendyBuckett · 18/02/2021 09:03

So easy to clean which is fab, but ours has scratched up over the years.

The most annoying thing though is capacity - so it will swap power from one ring to another. A pp said that was to do with wiring in the house - no idea. Ours is a Neff.

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 18/02/2021 09:28

Love my induction hob (Rangemaster).
So easy to clean and it doesn't matter if the knobs are accidentally turned on (I'm looking at you DDog).
Gas wasn't an option in this house unless we had Calor, but I can't say I miss it.
I know someone upthread mentioned charring peppers and aubergines but I have a kitchen blowtorch if needed.
Never had a power cut yet (touch wood) but I guess I could always unpack the camping stove Smile

Beebumble2 · 18/02/2021 09:39

I went from gas to induction and would definitely never go back to gas.
Do get the best you can, ours has several functions DH is better at using them all. ( win, win). But the timing facility is really good. No more burnt pans and perfect boiled eggs.
My Le Cruset pans work perfectly, but you do have to be careful not to drop them onto the surface.
Other than that stainless steel are perfect.

Kamma89 · 18/02/2021 10:07

I miss gas a lot. Think more versatile & I cooked better on it, but wouldn't swap back. Induction so much safer, more eco & easier to clean.
