If you’ve switched from gas to induction hob...

...would you recommend it? Or do you hate it and want to switch back?

Designing a kitchen and got to start thinking about hobs - I always thought I wanted gas but definitely prefer the look of induction. But don’t want to be swayed by looks over functionality!

Lots of love for induction, then! They do seem a bit marmite... I am concerned about losing the gas because it wouldn’t be easy to get it put in if I felt I’d made a huge mistake, if you see what I mean.
Get a combination hob?

GwendolineWindowlene · 18/02/2021 10:46

Hhm, it sounds a bit risky for my heavy handed cheffy wanker.

LindaEllen · 18/02/2021 10:52

Absolutely love mine! So easy to clean!

PresentingPercy · 18/02/2021 11:02

Gas is so much more difficult to clean. A decent induction is way better. There is no downside. It’s controllable, easy to clean and no flames! Just heat on the pan. Often people who haven’t got induction say no to it but it’s wonderful. You need a decent one though with lots of features including multiple pan sizes.

Saviouronthreelegs · 18/02/2021 11:06

I miss my gas so much Sad but new village doesn't have any gas provision and I didn't want bottles. It's very easy to clean which I like, but I really dont enjoying cooking on it so much. Plus I hate how much it beeps at me about everything.
I love my Le Creuset triple play pans though I bought myself in compensation for an induction hob.

MagicSummer · 18/02/2021 11:27

I love induction - I have two side by side single ovens, and the induction hob is to the left above 1.5 ovens. I also have a 2 ring gas hob on the right. I use induction most of the time and find it very responsive and efficient. My DH hates it and uses the gas when he wants to heat something up - I use if for things such as saute potatoes and frying chicken pieces. I have the best of both worlds really! I would recommend you consider this, OP, if you are not sure.

One little tip for everybody - when the induction hob was installed the fitter told me that a good way of keeping the hob clean and scratch-free was to lay kitchen paper across the top of the hob. The paper doesn't get hot and the heat goes through it to reach the saucepan. A clean tea towel does the same thing. My hob is nearly 10 years old and there is not a scratch on it.

PresentingPercy · 18/02/2021 11:55

I haven’t done that but a 11 year old Miele induction still looks perfect. No scratches. Just use the right pans and you are ok snd don’t drag anything.

I have a gas hob in London and I need it out!

waxed · 18/02/2021 12:02

Hmm I prefer gas. I don't like the look of induction hobs though they are easier to clean.

Franke · 18/02/2021 19:11

My old Le Creuset doesn't work on the induction but I have a kind of metal plate to put under it and it works then. Don't know about more recent Le Creuset.

Flamingolingo · 18/02/2021 19:52

@Franke that’s strange because Le Creuset is usually the absolute best for induction because it’s made of cast iron.

PresentingPercy · 18/02/2021 21:03

Induction hobs are just slabs of glass ! What’s not to like? Better than gas hobs in every way. Unless you use one, you won’t appreciate the differences.

minipie · 18/02/2021 21:19

I went from gas to induction and wouldn’t go back

Yes there are a couple of annoyances but there were far more annoyances with gas (and not just the cleaning)

Qc16 · 18/02/2021 21:24

@Ifailed

from what I can gather, induction hobs are great if you obsess about cleanliness and just want to heat things up.
😂 😂
Franke · 18/02/2021 21:28

@Flamingolingo. I didn't know that. I'm beginning to wonder if my induction hob is, in fact, a primitive hot plate. It's very old Le Creuset - I think it failed the magnet test. Maybe it's lost its induction oomph 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'll give it another go.

Kottbullar · 18/02/2021 22:02

I had induction for a month then switched back to gas. I just couldn't get on with it.

Crookairroad · 18/02/2021 22:38

I’d never go back to gas.

PresentingPercy · 18/02/2021 23:13

I cook a lot. What can you not do on an induction hob that you can do on gas? Just nothing comes to mind. My stir frys are just as good. I have modern Le Crueset hob to oven pans. I cannot think of anything a decent induction hob doesn’t do. Immediate control of “heat”, extremely quick heating up and lots of features like boost heat, timer and various pan size zones. My hob is 90 wide and is more than a good looking bit of kit. It’s a fantastic appliance.

notacooldad · 18/02/2021 23:42

Char the skin on peppers and tomatoes.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 18/02/2021 23:44

My new house has gas. I hate it. All those messy bits to clean. I'm getting an induction hob again as soon as I can afford it.

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/02/2021 23:49

You can. It’s the first thing I did (with green chillis) when I tested out an induction hob at my mil’s. It was a lot faster than gas.
Onestep2021 · 18/02/2021 23:53

Enjoy cooking a lot and haven’t found one thing I can’t cook as well on induction.
I think most things I can cook a lot better.
System is just much more responsive and you can get more precise temps.

Which do lots of reviews and I noticed when recently browsing how many induction hubs got low scores

I would always go induction from now on but would use Which and other reviews to make sure I got a good one.

Kottbullar · 18/02/2021 23:58

What can you not do on an induction hob that you can do on gas?
Have a pacemaker.

For me it wasn't about the cooking, I just couldn't get on with the controls.

I’m also an adventurous cook and need to decide if I stay with gas or move to induction. This thread is very helpful.

@PresentingPercy, Can you use an old fashioned wok on your induction hob? I mean the ones with a round bottom? If so how does it stay in place on the hob? Our gas hob has a little contraption/trestle that you can put under the wok to stabilise it.

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/02/2021 01:13

@Yellownotblue you can’t use rounded pots. They should be flat bottomed. You can get induction rings for rounded pans but I wouldn’t really waste money on them on an old wok unless you know it’s fully cast iron.

LoveFall · 19/02/2021 01:29

I love everything about induction, and I have used a really good gas range, and old fashioned electric.

Induction is very fast to be on or off, like gas. But unlike gas I can get a really low simmer. It does not take ages to cool down like traditional electric.

It is a marvel to clean, even if something boils over. It looks like new even with almost ten years of daily use.
