Ideas for this fireplace?

Any ideas how I can make this fireplace nicer? The house is 1920s and has lots of lovely features but I don't know when this style is from or what to do with it. Rip it out? Paint? The stone is shiny and smooth. Be grateful for ideas or pictures. Pinterest is giving me nothing so far! Thanks

I’d rip it out, it’s a 50s/60s fireplace. Look on Pinterest to see what 1920s fireplaces were like. Personally I’d put a wood burner and wood mantle fireplace in. We’ve done this in our 1920s cottage.

Thanks. We have a woodburner in another room and would quite like to use the fire as it is. Will rip out if needed but hoped there might be some I inspiration I didn't have. Outbutnotoutout your bricks are much nicer than mine!

Paint the bricks white and fill the centre with white church candles

And paint the base/mantelpiece tiles grey

Look up tiles for fireplaces. Some lovely ones online.

Thank you😊 its a 1900's miners cottage. The stone work was already there, but we added the wood beams.

Ooh outbutnotoutout 1900s miners sounds lovely! Thanks yukoandhiro I think I might do that and see how it goes. We have just moved in and there is quite a lot to do and I need small jobs to start as its all a bit overwhelming!

I have a 1930s home which came with a 1970s monstrosity of a gas fire. We removed the fire and surround and took the whole thing back to brick it had the original arch in and just needed a lot of scrubbing and some pointing. I'd definitely have a look behind.

I put an electric fireplace, wooden mantle and tiles.
