Built in kitchen appliances or freestanding?

What do you prefer and why? Free standing oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher or built in?

My fridge & dishwasher are built in and I prefer the clean lines.
The washing machine, tumble drier & fridge freezer in the utility are all free standing, but because they are in a run together they look okay. I don't like the look of a single appliance slotted in a row of units.
My oven is freestanding, which is what u wanted, but I think if I did it again I'd go for fitted.

I need to redo the kitchen so planning as well. I would prefer freestanding fridge freezer and dishwasher because they are easier to change and the choice is bigger. I’m not sure about the oven yet.

I’m tempted with fitted as I like clean lines. However lots of our white goods are only a year or two old. Feels a bit wasteful. Long term it would annoy me that I didn’t get what I really wanted though

I prefer free standing. I think built in looks clinical and dull. I also love a fridge magnet or two!

murbblurb · 16/02/2021 14:46

Freestanding. Cheaper, better made, last longer and no huge heavy doors.

Example - my kitchen was designed with a space for a large freestanding fridge. There are only two such on the market, the space will also take an integrated fridge if I can't get a replacement when needed. The integrated ones have less capacity for the same external size and cost a lot more - plus that heavy panel on the door.

Function not form - and what is so bad about a white door anyway?

Africa2go · 16/02/2021 15:14

Definitely built-in in the kitchen - but I'm another lover of clean lines and given the amount of time I spend in the kitchen, I need to love it. You'd never see an expensive kitchen with a dishwasher or fridge freezer on show - well maybe a massive american style f/f.

We also have a separate utility so have w/m and t/d in there (not built in) - is there a way you can carve off a section of the kitchen so you can have your existing w/m or t/d in a "utility cupboard" or something similar so you don't see them? Might be cheaper than replacing the appliances anyway!

mootymoo · 16/02/2021 15:24

Free standing, so much easier to replace/repair, which you will because the quality is rubbish these days.

murbblurb · 16/02/2021 19:33

oh yes, fridge magnets - yet another reason for free standing!

hidden things mean farting about with extra doors. As I said, function not form. What would a man do?

MaryLennoxsScowl · 16/02/2021 20:25

Depends on the size of the kitchen. Small kitchen = freestanding, because you can get a cooker with a separate grill and oven and hob in one 60cm slot, whereas built-in hob and oven units are invariably only a single oven. Bigger kitchen this isn’t an issue and integrated can look nicer. Built-in dishwasher, but not washing machine - the doors fall off washing machines when they spin too hard and shoogle the surrounding cabinets and weaken them. Freestanding usually have a couple of cm extra on each side to allow for wiggling.

Kitchen room I suspect is 13 foot by 18 foot. There is an area outside which I could develop into a utility cupboard for W/m and t/d.

You can specify / modify a kirchen so appliances aren’t truly integrated but they are hidden behind doors.
Wren made me extra wide doors and filler panels, The ‘cupboard’ under my gas hob hides my washer, When I replaced it recently I wish I’d noticed it has a curved front, made securing the base board interesting.
I have a built in oven with microwave above it though, I do like having them high up. I’ve got a massive, not American style, Fridge freezer in a pantry cupboard. We had to take the arcitrave off the door frame to get it in there!

Free standing you get more in the space, I'd rather have a decent freestanding double oven than my current indifferent built in oven, they are out of fashion though. Dishwashers are a bit different as the fitted ones are actually free standing with a door attached.
