Buying a house with an annexe or rennovate garage?

Hi all, hoping for some ideas / thoughts / insights as I'm a bit naive to the housing market.

We are a family of 4, looking to pool resources with a friend of ours who is a single guy (probably always will be)

We've seen some properties on zoopla with annexes, but they're few and far between in the area we want with the size of house we need.

Is it possible, and if so how difficult would it be, to turn a double garage in to an annexe?

It would need to have, kitchenette, lounge, bedroom and shower room as I don't want to share living facilities.

Do we need planning permission to turn a garage in to a living space?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Yes to pp and if it's totally self contained you'll need to register it for council tax.

We've got a big bungalow with an annexe that we're putting on the market soon. You can have first dibs if you want to live in North Lincolnshire Grin

@kennelmaid if my children were a few years older I would jump on that offer 😆😆

@titchy if it is a garage attached to the house and turned in to an annexe is that something we have to get planning permission for?

Some garages need PP to be converted at all. You would need to check any original permission for the garage.

If the living accommodation is to be occupied separately from the main house, PP is required.

We have converted our garage and also built an annexe.
We got planning permission for both.

We also now pay a separate council tax on the annexe.

My parents converted their garage (attached to the house)and they needed to apply for PP and now pay additional council tax for it too.

A guy from the council came along at various stages to 'check' it all!

The guy from the council will be from building control.
