Understair storage in load bearing staircase

We had ruled this out, but have noticed quite a few people locally have had a door opened into the under stair cavity, freeing up good storage. Has anyone else had this done and can advise on costs?

What do you mean, its a load bearing staircase (aren't they all?!)

We've had it done - got a local joiner to do it. Its brilliant - its probably just less than half of the width (the lower end). Have a shelf and then a pull out drawer below. MDF (which we then had painted) with soft close doors. Just over £500.

When I say load bearing it has brick walls on all sides and supports the structure of the house. Apparently most have stud walls? Yours sounds lovely x
