Bioethanol stoves?

Has anyone one got one? Do you rate them?

We were originally looking at getting a normal wood burner, but (without wanting to invoke the wrath of the pro and anti lobby in yesterday’s woodburner thread Wink) we’ve decided that it’s not for us. We’ve started looking at bioethanol stoves as an alternative.

My concern is that, whilst they give off the right cosy vibes, they don’t actually give off that much heat? Although we won’t use it as a primary heat source, we do live up north and extra heat is always welcome!
I think I’ve been put off a little by a living flame gas fire in a previous flat which looked nice, but was pretty useless.

Also the fuel looks quite expensive.

Would love to hear any thoughts!

We don’t have one so maybe listen to those who have but I’ll share my thoughts anyway! They aren’t a primary heat source like a wood burner; they won’t heat a room and will just about give a warm glow if you are sat close enough to them.
Like any fire, they can be a hazard but the bio-ethanol ones need particular care when refilling. Check out the safety videos on YouTube before buying one.
Finally, they give off an odour when they burn and so require ventilation after prolonged use, defeating the room warming use in the first place.
