Blocked shower drain - help

Hi,

Our shower is seriously blocked. Three bottles of buster down and no help.

Any other unblocker someone could recommend? For hair?

Thank you :)

A drain snake thing will help pull the hair blockage out

You need to pull the hair out. I don't think there is another way. It will smell disgusting though...You can buy a gadget in Poundland that will do the job, like a long spring shaped thing. You stick it down the plug turn it round, it grabs the hair and you pull.

We've been having to do ours really frequently with no improvement but havejust used the Cillit bang one on ours. It comes with a long bendy, thin tool with notches on which can get right down into the pipe. We pulled up a hair grip which was catching everything and clogging the pipe repeatedly.

You need to use caustic soda.
Pour the solution down the shower drain in the evening and leave it overnight. Flush away with hot water the next day.

I tried everything, every concoction known to man. Nothing worked. I went on Amazon and bought Luigis big blue coloured sink unblocker. Massive bellow. Worked after the third or 4th push. Get a seal round the hole and pull up quickly. Wouldn't be without it now and never had to use it again as all water runs away quickly. It's the hair etc it gathers up. I think it's about £9 or £10 but worth every penny. Lots of rave reviews and works great.

You're better off removing the blockage than sticking more chemicals down the drain

Katie1784 · 05/02/2021 22:21

Can you poke a skewer down to break up the clod? Or maybe try pulling it up though the plug hole with a mascara wand or a pair of forceps / tweezers, even if it breaks up as you do so?

Bluntness100 · 05/02/2021 22:22

Do not use caustic soda unless you know what you’re doing, it can warp plastic pipes and if not flushed through properly will harden like cement and cause an even bigger blockage.

jalopy · 06/02/2021 08:42

Caustic soda comes with instructions and works in our house.

That’s great. But the point still stands she needs to know what she’s doing, what kind of pipes she has and how to ensure it’s flushed through adequately as she can cause herself a major major problem if she does not,

I certainly wouldn’t be putting caustic soda in my shower as like nearly all modern showers the immediate drainage pipe is plastic, pvc, it’s the most commonly used drainage pipe today. And it would warp it, causing it to likely need fully replacing.

Hi all thank you! So having looked again at the shower there is no access to the actual pipe without taking it apart. The part we can access is clear of hair. However, next step is a commercial level unblocker and a more fancy plunger - so wish us luck! Otherwise we will have to get a plumber in we think :(

Have you tried using a big tube or Nair or similar hair removal cream for legs! I've used this in sinks followed by almost boiling water.

dementedpixie · 06/02/2021 16:34

The drain snake is thin and you pass it down into the pipes.

In my shower, you can't see the hole from the shower trap through to the pipe but you can feel it with your fingers.

BashfulClam · 06/02/2021 16:44

We had a similar shower and it kept blocking, we tried everything then one morning I got the plunger and did it repeatedly it suddenly gurgled much further along the pipe (heard it on the other side of the bathroom behind the boxed in pipes) and it never blocked again. I think it much further than I could get to that was blocked. Get a plunger and just keep doing it over and over and see if it helps.

chocohoardersanonymous · 06/02/2021 16:48

I had exactly the same problem last week. Pulled a big ball of hair out but the water still wasn't draining properly. I cleared all the hair I could see but there must have been another blockage further down the pipe and I had no way to access it. I looked online and found this

A cup full of bleach left for half an hour should dissolve the hair.

I tried it and it completely cleared the blockage first time. Might be worth a try.
