Fixing carpet to stairs? Help!

BirdsRoundandRound · 31/01/2021 11:41

DPup has destroyed the carpet on our bottom step. I would like to cut off the ruined carpet and fix it to just under the lip of the step above to keep it out of her reach.

Anyone know if this is something I could do myself, and if so what kind of fixings I would need to be able to do it? Might seem like it's obvious but Google has just confused me!

Pic for context. Thanks In advance for any advice

The easiest solution would be to cut it off below the lip with a Stanley knife, leave enough to be able to fold it back (so it is double thick) and then use carpet tacks under the lip (make sure you get a tack length to go through the two layers of carpet and have a least 1/4 inch to go into the stair lip. You will need space them quite close together as you don't want any movement of the carpet (being on the stairs)

I watched our carpet fitter fit stair carpets recently exactly like yours (ie not to the edges) and it looked like it would be easy to fix your problem.

As poster above said, cut with a Stanley knife and fold it under the stair lip, securing with nails or carpet tacks. The carpet fitter we had used a huge stapler so I think that would work as well. We've also used ordinary screws to secure it more (pets eh?!)

You could also replace the carpet on the missing stair with an off cut if you have any? Although DPup will probably do the same again - we have 2 cats and a kitten and they've found EVERY loose bit of carpet and ragged it 😂🙄

Thanks so much, really helpful! Sounds relatively easy.

And yes, I'm resigned to having a bare step for the moment as she'll definitely do the same thing right now. Dogs eh 🙄
