Ugly bathroom ideas

What would you do to improve this bathroom (on a budget)? Paint? New cabinet handles? New taps?

My eyes just keep coming back to the brown of the cabinet and the blah mirror but just not sure what to do about it.

Thanks! Smile

its very stark looking a warm tone paint on the walls would brighten it up

Plants! My answer to everything at the money, but a shelf over the mirror with a plant and a nice looking candle or a pretty vase? Or do you have a blank wall for a nice print, there’s lots of inexpensive ones on Etsy and frames are cheap from IKEA or the range.

Thethingswedoforlove · 25/01/2021 12:19

Looks bright and fresh and new and really nice to me! Not ugly at all!

uglybathroom · 25/01/2021 12:20

Do you think it's like putting lipstick on a pig though? I have no idea what kind of print would go? I feel like the shiny brown cabinet and the tiled edging look cheap and I don't know if it can be improved or if less is more.

I like the shelf idea!

What's the budget? I would put wooden trim (painted white) around the mirror, paint the walls white instead of magnolia, change the floor for a wood effect and add some accessories such as plants, a picture on the wall etc

TornadoOfSouls · 25/01/2021 12:25

It’s not my taste, but there’s nothing actually wrong with it. Changing the handles might be worth doing and I think a plant in a wicker or similar (natural material) container would work wonders.

Justme10 · 25/01/2021 12:27

I think the window needs a blind or something and you could use that to get some colour or print in to the room.
I think the contrast with the cabinets and walls won't look so bad once the room looks less empty.

Hedwigtheowl · 25/01/2021 12:28

A Roman blind introducing a new colour

Pluckedpencil · 25/01/2021 12:31

It looks great to me, clean and modern, no ornaments to get dirty. My only concern in the bathroom is hygiene and therefore easy cleaning. Less is more!
At a max the shelf idea is nice because you could put one of those thin strip lights underneath.

Shmithecat2 · 25/01/2021 12:32

Change the mosaic border tiles. Get a framed mirror. Different floor tiles. And yes to plants and shelves.

ComtesseDeSpair · 25/01/2021 12:34

It’s a bit clinical but looks in pretty good condition. Agree that a colourful window blind would soften the look. You could probably change the cabinet doors reasonably cheaply as well, particularly if you’re handy enough to cut down e.g. nice kitchen cabinet doors to fit.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 25/01/2021 12:44

I don’t think there’s much wrong with it? The floor and the tile trim are the standout “issues” to me, but firstly they aren’t that bad and secondly sorting them definitely wouldn’t be budget friendly!

It’s not a beautiful bathroom by any means, but it looks modern, easy to clean and hygienic. I wouldn’t spend much on accessories- I don’t really see the point in a bathroom, just makes for more stuff to clean!

Beebumble2 · 25/01/2021 12:51

Good foundation for a tropical theme. Large Palm plant on the floor, window dressing ( blind, shutters) and large bright picture.
Also go with the suggested shelf.

Deux · 25/01/2021 12:57

Jeez, that’s not an ugly bathroomSmile. It looks cold and clinical with lots of straight lines. I’d try to introduce some texture and different shapes to break it up and distract the eye. Fluffy mat I. Front of the sink, stripey towels/tasseled towels, circular mirror on another wall, window blind, plants.

Beebumble2 · 25/01/2021 13:58

Something like this perhaps?

I think it’s the whiteness of the walls that makes the unit stand out that much, so I’d start by painting the walls a different colour. If you have the space, a houseplant or two would help to make it less clinical too

Popsy321 · 25/01/2021 14:35

It's not an actual bathroom though is it. It's just a designed mock up.

Shmithecat2 · 25/01/2021 14:58

I'm glad you said that, I thought so too.
Whatsnewpussyhat · 25/01/2021 15:06

Is that your actual bathroom though?

Changing the cupboard doors wouldn't be too expensive.

MaizeBlouse · 25/01/2021 15:12

I'd paint the walls in pigeon by farrow and ball (colour match, obvs). Leave the sink cabinet as is.
Small jute rug on the floor in front of the sink, preferably a circular shape to break up all the straight lines.

Get a small circular marble tray and a woven storage basket to go on top to keeo hair ties or something in. Buy naice hand soap and have it on a dish by the taps. Lovely big plant in a nice plant pot too.

A3 Mattise style print on the wall in a walnut frame.
That'd do the trick I think!

DianaT1969 · 25/01/2021 15:13

Botanical prints look good in bathrooms.
I really like your bathroom. Clean and minimalist.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 25/01/2021 15:15

Well I’d try to change the weird Esther effect where the units meet the floor for a start.

It’s a mock up? If you don’t like it, change the design.

Am I missing something?

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 25/01/2021 15:15

Esher, thanks Autocorrect.

Nanny2many · 25/01/2021 15:19

The border tiles are a bit old fashioned I’d say. Look at alternative options for the unit front. Would avoiding glass be better. My understanding is it’s best to mix up textures and shapes to avoid a 1 Dimensional room
