How much notice should I expect for exchange and completion date?

Our solicitors have said we are working towards exchange in 2 days and completion in 5. However this isn’t confirmed and they will not commit to anything other than ‘working towards this’.
At what point would it be reasonable to expect a confirmed completion date? I have one day off work to move only and need to plan for wifi (work from home), insurance etc.
Everyone is moving right now so no wriggle room with the removals either, we have the last slot for our provisional completion date in 5 days. If it falls through we have no removals and I can’t get another day off work!
Our buyer is in rented and our purchase is empty.
Is this normal to be hanging at the last minute?

If 5 days notice of completion isn't enough for you, tell them that's not acceptable, and tell them how long you do want between exchange and completion.
Actually it' s 3 days notice, because the completion date is not confirmed until exchange. You can't book removals until you have a confirmed date. If you are getting a mortgage, funds need to be requested and drawn down, and 3 days isn't much time to turn that around.
If you are likely to complete at short notice, don't do it on a Friday, which is always a busy day for removal companies.

You would normally have a completion date pencilled in at least a couple of weeks in advance to enable the chain to book removals etc. Most removal companies won’t have availability with a few days notice.
