I am 99% certain that there is a possum living in my roof space.

His scurrying about wakes me up 6 or 7 times a night. It's been going on for weeks. It is way, WAY too loud to be a rat or similar. It's something big that only comes out at night. It makes possum noises. I really think it's a possum.

Am I fucked? I know you aren't supposed to disturb them. They are protected. So is that it? Do I just have to live with a possum now?

Council might have a trap or refer you to your nearest fauna rescue. Possums are very territorial so would need a very distant relocation. Your fauna rescue should be able to advise. Otherwise your local vet probably can advise.

If you have possums, you should see droppings outside. Try spotlighting, too. I dearly love a possum but not in my ceiling.

Once you are sure you have cleared them all (assuming that it isn’t rats) get your roof sorted out including the eave spaces and trim tree branches.
