Am I completely mad to think we can rehang a door??

We need to rehang the door on my daughter's boxroom so that it opens outward. Could this be a DIY job - my husband is quite handy? If so any advice on what to do/not to do? Any good YouTube videos you have seen?

The problem will be the frame not the door. The door is easy and you basically just need to flip the hinges round.

I think you could probably find a tutorial on youtube

Thanks very much Nancy

Lots of them on YouTube, watch as many as you can first . It all depends on how handy your chap is ?
If the frame has a fixed rebated lining then you can’t do it , if it’s a lining with the removable strip then it’s ok . I can’t tell from the pictures which it is.

Many moons ago when we were poor and there was no other option we rehung some old pine doors. It's not difficult but it is easy to get wrong. :D Check what tools you need to help you, and always measure more than once if you need to cut bits off the door.
Agree with previous poster, search on Youtube for vids.

My DP has hung all of our doors (during a renovation). He is no carpenter (he is an electrician) and he is much slower than a carpenter would be but he's done a good job. So yes, it can definitely be done.

Thanks very much Chumley and sb. I've attached a couple of photos with the door open (the second one is from inside the room) in case this helps with the fixed rebated lining question Smile

As previous poster says - it’s not difficult but it’s easily done wrong. Watch a couple of YouTube videos and measure everything several times before you add screws etc. DP just rehung our loft hatch so that it opens outwards rather than inwards and it took far longer and involved a lot more measuring and shuffling about than you’d think (and it’s now a little askew in the frame, but I’m keeping my mouth shut.) We’ve agreed to get a handyman in to do all the main interior doors.

As it's quite an old door frame (?) chances are looking at that last picture that the (I don't know the correct terms) the three strips of wood on the inside of the frame will just be attached by 'panel pins' and can be levered up and off with a sharp chisel. I'm trying to remember how the guys that hung some new doors for us did it.
Anyway here's a youtube vid showing how to reverse a doors swing - but their frame has no strips.

Daftasabroom · 18/01/2021 11:43

Easy enough, first remove the door and latch plate from the frame, leave the hinges on the door. Then use a Stanley knife to cut the paint all the way round between the jamb trims (strips) and frame. Next lever off the jamb and trims. Sand the old paint flat. Buy new jamb to match the old. Rehang the door flush the frame the other way round. Refix the jamb to frame flush to the door but with 1mm packing, an old cereal box would do, this will give a bit of a gap for paint. Fill all the old holes. Redecorate.

Oh and keep your fingers crossed the frame is square.

Or replace with a bifold door if space is the issue.

BeverlyCleary · 18/01/2021 14:30

Thanks very much Comtesse Daftas and titchy Smile

I still can’t work out which one you have 🤪

It can be done with either really if you have the more solid rebated lining, it can be hung on other side but would mean cutting the door down, to fit the smaller width and then filling the rebate with a strip of timber. It would make the opening slightly narrower. The other lining is much easier to do.

Thanks very much for the explanation Chumley

A carpenter can hang a door much quicker, and much better, than the average handyman, general builder, plumber or DIYer.

I would certainly ask around for recommendations from people you know and trust (this does not include advertising websites where people pay to be listed).

RickiTarr · 18/01/2021 17:44

It all depends on how handy your chap is ?

God forbid she should do it without a “chap”. 🙄

NewYearNewTwatName · 18/01/2021 17:52

RickiTarr
glad it wasn't just me who cringed. what was wrong with "depends on how handing you/both are."

Speaking as the person in our house who has hung doors in the past (not round the opposite way though, as per the OP)

Chumleymouse · 18/01/2021 18:10

Errrr because she already said her husband is quite handy ? But it all depends on how handy he is , 🙄

Seeingadistance · 18/01/2021 20:33

The fact that the OP refers to her husband’s DIY skills suggest that it will be her “chap” who’s going to rehang the door.
