Over Bed Cupboards

We have just moved to a very small house. We were in a very large flat before but we needed an extra bedroom and also lockdown with no garden nearly killed us!

The main bedroom is only 7"10 wide sadly.

We need wardrobes and storage and the only way we can do it is by having floor to ceiling fitted wardrobes but these will be either side of the bed and round a corner in an L shape. I know cupboards over the bed are a big no no on here, but it really is the only way we can get the storage we need. Are we making a massive mistake? We will probably live here for 5-7 years before selling so I don't want to put off buyers when we do come to sell.

We would go for a white or light grey to try and keep it more modern, but just worry it will really put people off, as I am not too keen on them, but it is literally the only way we can get additional storage for us to use.

It can look good, also look at beds with storage.

I think it can be done in less old fashioned ways, for example like this:

Will you have storage under the bed? When we were in a flat, we had a lift up beds and could store a great deal under there.

If you are staying there several years, any new owner will likely remove the additional cupboards or redesign if they need to.

If you do go it, ensure you can still sit up in bed properly and also get in and out of bed without hitting your head on the cupboards.

Sharps will come and tailor a system to fit. I found them good and efficient in my last house. Definitely worth it.

We already have an ottoman bed, so have storage in the bed. Just need additional storage for clothes and shoes and all the other stuff we have. We are not hoarders at all, but we had massive fitted wardrobes at the flat so currently we have nothing here and over the bed cupboards were all we could come up with. We have had our fitter out this morning to measure up and he knows we want a modern look, he has designed it to also be symmetrical with drawers under the wardrobe so we gave drawer space as well. I'm glad that it won't put everyone off (I know we won't please everyone), but also they will have the same issues as us unless they turn the third bedroom into a walk in wardrobe (we don't have the luxury to be able to do that).

Yes don’t turn the third bedroom into a walk in wardrobe, but do make sure every room has some storage, if you can.

Also whenever you are thinking of new furniture buy something with storage - side tables, coffee table, footstools, only a little storage in each but it all adds up! If you buy sofas with tall enough legs, you can use under bed drawers on rollers underneath (push them to the back so not so visible).
