Hi.

So after a few months, we have managed to not only find but also like a property. It’s a spacious 4 bedroom detached house with an attached1 bedroom & kitchen annex. You can access the annex from inside & There is a door outside aswell.
However, after reading about properties with an annex, it seems there is an issue with either council tax and mortgage or both.

We had a plan to renovate the annex and incorporate it within the house, therefore no longer having 2 separate kitchens etc & having one big kitchen and 2 lounge rooms/living areas.
I am waiting on a phone call with the agent to discuss it into more details but until then, I’d just like some advice on what I could possibly do.

I think its only if there is someone living there that your renting too that its a bit more complicated op.
Do you have any pictures so we can advise further?

My sister and brother in law bought a house with an annexe and absolutely love it. So many options long term! You will have fun!

Some mortgage companies will give mortgages on these properties. We got ours through the Cumberland Building Society. We have to pay council tax for both properties.

My parents had an annexe like this built on. Because there was an internal connecting door there was no separate council tax fees or anything. They were able to rent it out under rent a room. They just kept the internal door locked when they had someone living there.
