I can't open my front door

My front door is stuck, I think the rain has made the wood swell. What can I do to get it open? Please! I want to do all I can before calling on someone. It does budge and I feel sure a good hard shove from outside would push it open - but I cannot go outside.

When I finally do get it open I'll organise a new door but for now........

Do you have a back door? Go out and round to shove it from the outside?

waitrosetrollydolly · 13/01/2021 19:44

Blow dry it with a hairdryer ( if you are inside ) I do this and it works ( wooden door swells in certain wet weather /wind combinations.)

Plonque · 13/01/2021 19:45

I know that sounds dead obvious but if you only have one door I'd be a bit worried about not being able to get out of it.
If that's the case, can you ring a neighbour to come and push it for you? Anyone dead close that it wouldn't be a problem for.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 13/01/2021 19:46

Can you get your hand through the letterbox to the outside so you can get a really good grip on the door and yoink as hard as you can?

RickiTarr · 13/01/2021 19:47

Yes, any fan or halogen heater or hairdryer. (Anything that produces heat that you can direct at the door).

Once you’ve got it open, plane the door down slightly.

Palavah · 13/01/2021 19:55

Can you climb out of a window to get to it?

There's not enough room between my house and the next door for me to get around; believe me I wish there was!

Go out the back and knock on neighbours door and ask if they can give your door a shove or if you can go through their house and do it yourself.

I am considering that if all else fails. Also calling on neighbour but really don't want to if I can avoid it.

Thanks for the hairdryer suggestions, I will try that. I also have a fan heater which I could put on something at the right height to blow on the bit that is sticking.

The situation reminds me of Reeves and Mortimer - 'Trapped in my flat', if anyone remembers that. It's a minute into the video. I'm trying to be lighthearted about this, if I wasn't, I'd scream.

You don't need a new door! It will go back down after a few dry days. Ours didn't open for a week due to relentless rain bit was fine once it stopped.

LizFlowers · 13/01/2021 20:52

Thank you somuddled. I'm never going to be in this position - ever again! It is just too ridiculous for words.

If you do have a stuck front door, try not to have a stuck front door.

Oblomov20 · 13/01/2021 21:05

All my doors, internal and external have swelled in the last few months. Drives me crazy.

Are you out?!
LizFlowers · 13/01/2021 22:31

Er...no, I am indoors.

Anyway - I just got the door open! I did use a hairdryer on it earlier, at the edge next to frame where it was sticking, don't know how much that helped. I thought that I would have to 'phone neighbour tomorrow. However I decided I'd have one more try and it opened. Whoohoo, I am free at last.

I am so relieved. Thank you all for your support.
