Island with hob - how big is yours?

Planning the island of our kitchen refurbishment at the moment. The hob will be on it but I'm trying to work out how safe it will be to have stools at the overhang. The planned size is 950cm x 2.3m, so the stools will be right behind the hob, if that makes sense, like this pic, but slightly bigger. My concern is spitting oil, although I don't do much frying so cooking is more pot based.

OP I’m not sure about spitting oil, I’d be worried about a pan boiling over and splashing over someone sat down. It looks too tight to me.

Hmm our island is 1.2 x 2.6 and the hob is to one end and the seating to the other.

I tend to sit in the seat nearest the hob to do paperwork and do find it gets splashed if I leave it within a foot or so of the hob. It’s not just frying it’s things like simmering tomato sauce or bolognese which does spit out droplets.

So I would say at 900 wide and with seats directly behind the hob, yes people will be spattered. Sorry.

Thanks both. The more I think about it, the less convinced I am. I will see if I can rejig the wall units on the other side to fit in an extractor.

To keep the hob on the island (which I love), could you have hob towards one end of the island and the stools around the opposite corner? Depends how many stools you’re having, would work if it’s only 2 like in the picture.

I was actually planning to have it to the left as you're sitting, with the seats to the right, but I still think it's too tight.

Could you have one of those rising extractor thingies to seperate the hob and the seating?

Barmbraic · 10/01/2021 23:14

I did look at them but I don't have the cabinet space for an under counter extractor (oven is staying in the island) and I think it would take up too much of the counter space itself anyway.

Also they are apparently rubbish at extraction.

Why do you have to have the hob on the island? Is there not room for it in the actual kitchen bit?

We have an island and were asked so many times if we were putting a hob or a sink in it. We have neither, its just a lovely big work space/table for the bar stools. If you could put the hob elsewhere, leave the island empty apart form a massive vase of flowers.
