Was I unfairly charged and is there anything I can do?

When I moved into my new build home it came with a years contract with the alarm company where it would call out to them if the alarm went off. I didn't want to continue this after a year because it wasn't a service I needed.

Shortly after this, the alarm went off and started beeping constantly saying it was unable to call out - I presumed this was because of a fault on the alarm companies side due to me having cancelled the contract. I assumed it was something that they should have switched off prior to the contract ending so that this wouldn't occur and called them asking to fix it. They didn't mention any charges on the phone and I assumed that there wouldn't be any, given that it was their fault with the system.

The technician came out, wasn't sure how to fix it and so had to call someone, ended up being there just over an hour. I checked with him if there would be any charges and he wasn't sure.

I then got a bill for £259. I called them to ask why I was charged when they'd not mentioned any charges - they said that they would not normally know how much it would cost until the work is done and also they don't know what contract someone is on when they call. They also said that this fault was NOT due to cancelling the contract and I was just unlucky. I paid as I was scared about this affecting my credit but now I'm regretting it.

Is this a fair charge? Is there anything I can do? It's a massive bill that I wasn't expecting. I would not have asked them to do the work and found another company if I'd known.
