Gas/fire/ safety check

Wondering if someone can help explain something to me... just had a nightmare of a time trying to get my boiler/fire serviced (they quoted me significantly less and now won’t honour it!)

But now I’m confused and hoping someone can explain something to me...
They keep saying they can either check the gas fire or service it - difference of £50 but I have to pay upfront either way. Surely if they check the fire and nothing needs doing then I would have lost the £50 on a ‘service’ ... but got told it isn’t like that and I don’t understand?

I responded to it with my first preggie hormones tears which was very embarrassing for both of us!

I should add I very much was not planning on doing a massive renovation project, while pregnant, on my own. But here we are....

Think it’s the first time I’ve felt properly overwhelmed by it

So you're in the middle of a renovation? Why do you need the boiler checked at this point?
