Where is your kitchen sink?

The accepted wisdom is to locate the sink at the window overlooking the garden or an outside space. But f you have a dishwasher is that still necessary? Would it be a waste to use that space for washing up at the sink when little hand washing up and time at the sink will be happening?

Totally agree that it's not necessary. Someone I know recently redid their kitchen and put the sink back in the exact same position. The result is that it chops up the workspace and completely disrupts the flow of the kitchen. It should have been to one side.

I am possibly planning to redo my kitchen and if I go ahead with it the sink will go next to the dishwasher towards the end of a line of units.

The main thing to me is to fit a fairly generous kitchen sink. It's annoying not being able to properly fit a saucepan in.

Of course drainage needs to be taken into account. That at be one reason sinks were always on an outside wall.

Chasingsquirrels · 05/01/2021 15:23

Mine used to be under the window but we had a conservatory put on which took away that window, so its now on an internal wall.
Utility sink is under a window.

Attached pictures taken recently for another MN thread about cupboard heights.

Even with a dishwasher a fair amount of time is spent at the kitchen sink so, all else being equal, it is still the best place.

However, if there is something else you would rather have in that space then just do it. It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks - unless you are thinking of selling in the near future.

My sink is on an island and I look out of double doors into the garden, I don't spend too much time at the sink as I have a dishwasher (that I could never live without!!)

Thanks. This has given me the confidence to consider remodelling to put a breakfast sitting area facing the window and outside and put the sink elsewhere. I am not sure how it will pan out but I think I can make better use of the view than for a spot of hand washing up.

@Chasingsquirrels and @MmeCamenbert lovely kitchens. @NannyGythaOgg we would want to sell in the distant future but it but I want to future proof to fit with how modern living might increasingly transform as time goes by. Might dishwashers become the norm do the amount of washing up at the sink reduces massively?

Mine is located on a sticky out bit , so I have a full run of worktop under the kitchen window. I bought the house with the kitchen like this and really like it.

Just to add, because mine is on an internal wall the plumbing had to be retro-fitted to it.

Originally the pipes (hot, cold & waste) were exposed, but sat behind the fridge freezer and stacked washing machine & tumble drier.

When the kitchen was redone in 2019 I had the pipes boxed in.
The one with the dog bed is while it was all in progress.
The other is done, but you can't see the skirting along it as the dog cushion is in the way.

Just something to consider.

@Newyearnewrule
I think that is a great reason to re-site your sink.
I have had a dishwasher for over 20 years and still spend some time at the sink each day - food prep, sharp knives, delicate glasses, oven trays etc all need water. It certainly wouldn't bother me if there wasn't a window there though - and in longer term future, I suspect a screen could go above your sink if required Grin

NannyGythaOgg · 05/01/2021 15:56

PS - If I was doing my kitchen again, I would have twin dishwashers. Regularly used stuff would just come out of one and back into the other and the only 'putting away' would be more rarely used entertaining stuff.

Purplethrow · 05/01/2021 15:56

It also means I can nip down in the nude for a drink in the middle of the night and neighbours can’t see me !

Chasingsquirrels · 05/01/2021 15:56

Also, the mains water supply originally came in under the window where the sink was, so when we took that wall out for the conservatory the mains had to be relocated. In our case under the floorboards a bit and up with the stopcock in a corner cupboard.

Mine too!
Comefromaway · 05/01/2021 16:02

I'm having my kitchen done at the moment. The sink won;t be at the window because if it was there would only be room for a single bowl and drainer. No room for two people (the kids) to stand next to each other washing and drying, only one person at a time. So it will go on the adjacent wall.

HerRoyalNotness · 05/01/2021 16:03

In the island looking towards the living room. Dishwasher is in it too. If I’d designed the house it would be to the rear looking at the garden.

GervaseFen · 05/01/2021 16:10

@MmeCamenbert can I ask how wide your island is?

SollaSollew · 05/01/2021 16:29

Mine is facing what used to be the back door that has been blocked up and the kitchen window replaced with doors. There is a bin unit built in on one side and the dishwasher on the other which is very useful.
