Hi MNers - Wishing all a warm Happy New Year 21.

We are have a 4m rear extension, and I'm fascinated to have roof lantern. Ours is SW facing extension for kitchen diner. We have flat roof (with incline as required)

  1. is ventilation required? Korniche doesn't have vent option
  2. which brands are better Atlas/ Korniche/ any other
  3. Planning permission for roof lantern ???

Any thoughts, guidance before I jump in.

We have a roof lantern. I'm not sure of the brand but it doesn't have any ventilation.

It's fabulous for the very generous amount of light it lets into the room. Our room is NE facing and now we very rarely need to open the window blinds for daylight (I like my window blinds totally closed for privacy as we live on a narrow rural road, no pavements so people passing can see straight into the house). Our room is 6m x 5m and the roof lantern is 1.5m x 1m so not huge or domineering at all.

The only downside? Flies, bees, moths etc sometimes get trapped up there trying to get out and inevitably their tiny little bodies end up dropping onto the dining table below. Plus cobwebs in the corners of it are hard to reach to clean. Apart from that I can't think of any other negatives.

thank you @MiaFarrowsWheelbarrow, noted the downside.
How do you clean them. How often do you clean them. Ours is SW facing hence wondering if we also need roof lantern blinds to restrict the amount of sunlight.

Clean them? Erm...never. But I am a slob.

We've got three 2.3m x 1.5m flat triple glazed roof lights in the extension we had built last year. From duplus.co.uk
Great price and service.
They don't open and we haven't needed blinds - room faces west.
Like previous posts only issue i can think of is insects living around the inside edges (regular hoovering required) and bees that fly up into the light well but can't get out (ended up buying a butterfly net to catch and free them)
Our window cleaner climbs up on the roof and cleans the outside. Haven't tried to clean the inside yet.
We're currently looking up at snow covered glass which is a first❄️

Wow @cortex10 I love the thought of snow on the roof lantern. All the best.
Duplus look quite good, I will ask for quotation.

Yes, Duplus is the company we used too. Good value.
