Hello
Can you please advise which of these 2 areas are better to live in and transport options into London, thank you

Depends whereabouts in either place. Transport wise, Chigwell is Central Line, whereas Chingford is overground.

Lozza70 · 01/01/2021 13:52

Good overground from Chingford to Liverpool Street and goes through Walthamstow so can pick up the Victoria line. Depends where you live in Chingford to get to the station. It’s quite spread out.

Katjolo · 01/01/2021 16:41

Where in Chingford?

Mollyeyes · 02/01/2021 01:11

Thank you, just like to know which area you prefer

Chingford has many more shops and restaurants than Chigwell. Chigwell is a more expensive area in terms of house prices.

PodgeBod · 02/01/2021 01:35

Chingford easier for commuting. Chigwell nicer area to raise children in (if relevant). I've lived in both so happy to answer any questions and I think they're both great areas to be fair.

Chigwell nicer area to raise children in

Chigwell is a biggish area , Hainault is Chigwell .
There's a good Central Line service ( Hainault/Barkingside/Fairlop) but no overground as said above .
Big residential areas .

Not sure of all the areas , good and bad in both .
North Chingford (where the station is ) the houses are ££ and its a bit of a walk to Chingford Mount where the shops are .

You'd need to look at Crime levels ( not anecdotes )

North Chingford (around the station) is very nice and has some lovely independent restaurants, cafes and shops on and around Station Road. It is also on the doorstep of Epping Forest and very close to other nice areas like Woodford and Buckhurst Hill. It is a good mix of green and safe while not feeling too far away from the hustle and bustle of London. Only 25 mins or so on the train to Liv Street or 10 mins to Walthamstow Central where you can hop on the Victoria line tube. Lots of buses. It is more expensive than the rest of Chingford, generally, which is spread out and residential although a fair amount of general shops in Chingford Mount. The exception being Highams Park which is also on the overground and has similar amenities and feel to North Chingford (and increasingly similar prices, too).

I don’t know Chigwell that well but from when I’ve visited it seems a bit more being in Essex proper and less like London - that could be good or bad depending on what you’re looking for! Seemed nice and green. On the central line so well connected although that line can be very busy - and hot in the summer.

Mummyto3gorgeousgirlies · 02/01/2021 12:28

I grew up in Chigwell. It is a really really lovely area. I personally think it's a nicer area than Chingford, but underground line is not the best as less frequent trains for commute on what is called the loop line. Whilst I still lived with my mum I worked in the city and was an easy commute - is also easy to west end as both are on central line.

Ps to other poster Hainault and Fairlop are not Chigwell they are their own areas near by...

niceupthedance · 02/01/2021 12:39

Highams park, next along the train line from chingford is where Id go

Mollyeyes · 03/01/2021 22:39

Thank you to everyone for in-depth comments and great help

Chingford hands down. More going on, easier to get into London if you need to and more for your money. The difference in house prices between the two is pretty big. As PP said, north Chingford is lovely!

I grew up in Buckhurst Hill and spent time in both areas. I went to school in Chigwell so know it well.

What’s the area like to live in ..quiet or noisy

Mimmya · 22/05/2021 15:53

Do you know the e4 area and Is it a quiet place to live ? Also what is the crime rate if you know please ..regards miriam

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/05/2021 15:55

I don't know Chigwell much, but Chingford is nice in a quiet way. I have lots of friends there and it always feels like going back in time by 20-30 years when I visit - it doesn't feel like London. The trains to Liverpool St are much more reliable than they used to be.

Greyingmumto3 · 22/05/2021 15:59

There is some cross over with Hainault and Chigwell . My families address is Chigwell but I always refer to it as Hainault as they are on the border and not the “posh “ end

ChingfordNameChange · 22/05/2021 19:58

I live in E4 - crime rates are ok for London, I’ve never felt unsafe. Friday Hill is an ok area, my favourite is the Highams Park area. But even in the postcode you’ve posted you’ve got the lake and forest on your doorstep - which was a godsend in lockdown!

pinksnowball · 22/05/2021 21:15

Both areas are fine but I prefer Chigwell. Mumsnet loves Chingford/Highams Park though!!

Mimmya · 22/05/2021 22:40

That’s Chingford Hatch. It’s perfectly ok but it’s mostly a large council estate. There is a shopping area but the shops are mostly cheap ones. It’s not upmarket in the way that North Chingford and some parts of Chigwell are.
Mimmya · 23/05/2021 19:23

Ah ok. Thank you .only we maybe moving there But before hand wanted to know if it’s a case of out of the frying pan as at presant we live i. Hackney
