Any electricians out there? Before I go insane!

Hi everyone,

Hoping an electrician is out there or anyone who would know how to help with my TV drama.

Not sure if it matters, woke up this morning to snow, so it has been extremely cold outside.

I live in an old tenement flat. Have a TV in the kitchen and the exact same LG TV in one of the bedrooms. The kitchen TV was on for approximately 15 minutes this morning when it turned itself off. I done all the usual, switched off at plug, unplugged, waited ages, done hard reset not using remote. Nothing worked. The TV turns on but flickers and the red power light switches on and off. Immediately called knowhow at curry's as it is covered and they said they would send someone out Thursday to collect and have it back to us within a week. All fine except now I don't think it's the TV!!!

Tried the TV in the other room and it works. The TV even works if I take it off of the bracket and put it on the floor. It switches off as soon as it is lifted to around waist height. I thought it could be the power cable so whilst on the wall plugged in an extension and lifted the cable to same height as if it was on the floor, still doesn't work.

Luckily we know an electrician, he came out today and replaced the socket and still nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions? It seems to be when it's put on the wall bracket and I am wondering if something in the wall has been damaged.

My husband and I going nuts trying to work this out. Needless to say I am cancelling curry's picking up the TV as I know its not the TV that's faulty!

Help!!

Also forgot to mention, I have sky in both rooms. The one in the bedroom has the main box and the kitchen has a sky q mini box

Think you’ve got a poltergeist....... phone for a priest tomorrow.

Have you swapped the tv with the one in the other room? If the kitchen TV doesn't work in the bedroom then it's definitely the TV. If the bedroom TV doesn't work in the kitchen it's something else.

WeeDangerousSpike · 29/12/2020 20:03

Sorry, see you've tried it in the bedroom, did you try the bedroom one in the kitchen?

TheSockMonster · 29/12/2020 20:09

Could it be a loose power connection? Can you replicate the fault by holding the power cable in a position that simulates the one it’s at when on the wall?

Alternatively, what is on the other side of that wall? Does the socket share a spur (cable to fuse box) with another socket on that same wall in another room? Or could it be catching electrical/magnetic interference from another appliance?

Terriblecreature · 29/12/2020 20:15

Hi all, thanks for your replies.

Both tvs have been tried in a few different rooms. It only seems to be the kitchen that's the problem. The TV has been in here for 3 and half years without any issues.

It's an old brick wall that on the other end is a wall out on the close. No other room attached as such.

The same wall leads out into my hall way, I will attach a picture (excuse the mess) there is another socket further along the wall and that seems to be working.

You need PigletJohn to attend this thread, they can solve most household issues.

Have you tried unplugging everything in the kitchen and seeing if it works then? Could be interference from another appliance. If it does work you’ll need to plug them all back in one by one to identify the culprit.

Does the TV from the bedroom suffer the same fault when hung from the wall bracket and plugged into the kitchen socket?

PigletJohn · 29/12/2020 21:36

try an extension lead from a different socket; and try plugging a kettle or fan heater into the suspect socket. Though I doubt the socket is at fault.

unplug the aerial wire in case there is an earth fault or something coming down the cable, especially if it is a shared dish or aerial.

I don't know what the cause is.

PigletJohn · 29/12/2020 21:48

occasionally strange behaviour is caused by interference from other nearby equipment. Sometimes an arc welder or pirate radio transmitter but more often a wifi router or baby alarm. I once had steel scaffolding interfere with the signal.

if the tv works in one place but not in another it must surely be something about the place.

PigletJohn · 29/12/2020 21:52

or it's possible a mounting screw for the bracket has pierced an electrical cable in the wall. Cables (should) run directly vertically or horizontally from switches, sockets and wall lamps.

PlanDeRaccordement · 29/12/2020 22:17

I’m betting a rat or mouse has chewed a wire in the wall.

wonkylegs · 29/12/2020 22:48

Mouse shorted our dishwasher circuit but only after he'd also chewed through the waste pipe grrr

I had exactly this issue. It ruined our whole Christmas Eve evening. So ours is a Samsung. Power button randomly started flickering and TV switching off and on constantly. Took it off wall and brought in our other Samsung. Worked fine. Put it on wall... exact same issue. Our plug socket is behind the TV so I assumed it was a loose connection in that. Took TV off wall, tried it in another socket, fine. Tried original TV in another socket, also fine. Put original TV back on wall, connected to extension lead. Same issue. Then my partner stood up holding the spare TV and noticed the issue stopped but every time he put it down again the tv started playing up again Confused Honestly we were beyond confused and I had no idea how I would explain this to an electrician. It suddenly dawned on me later that when power was flickering it looked like it was receiving a signal. I took all remotes out the room and it was fine!!! Turned out our firestick remote has broken and is constantly on, it was on sofa in front of TV. So when my partner stood up with the other TV it blocked the signal Blush

Bet this is the issue with yours. God it drove me absolutely crazy!

Terriblecreature · 30/12/2020 08:34

Thanks all with ur replies. The TV has started working this morning 🙈 I can't believe it. Although come to think of it the firestick remote fell just before it switched off yesterday and I wonder if that had anything to do with it? It's back working that's the main thing. I used to always say I wasn't a TV person but u really miss it when u don't have it!
