Removal costs

I have always just hired a van and got family/friends to help move but obviously can't rely on that this year.
What sort of prices have you paid if you've got a removal company in? I'm in a smallish two bed moving just under 10 miles away.

We have just had a quote of £1279 to move from a 1st floor flat to a 3 bed house about 6 miles away. This includes full packing service.

LouLou789 · 24/12/2020 15:20

We’ve just had a quote for £1440 (inc insurance and VAT) to move from 3 bed house to similar about 40 miles away and with us doing the packing. I think that’s expensive and am getting another quote.

Loofah01 · 24/12/2020 15:30

1300 for packing and moving across town

LouLou789 · 24/12/2020 16:16

I suppose one factor might be whereabouts we are. I am in Yorkshire

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 24/12/2020 16:41

I just paid £135 for removals - 3 bed house moving 1 mile. Not much furniture though. They were £55 an hour I think. I reckon with furniture might have been £250.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 24/12/2020 16:41

No packing for me though.

We moved 4 years ago, 2 bed house but 4 people. Moved about 3 miles. I think we paid about £800. We are north east. They were worth every penny. Arrived at old house at 11 and left new house at 2pm.

Mosaic123 · 24/12/2020 17:25

Last week! £70 per hour using two men and a big van. Romford Removals and they were great.

cloudchaos · 24/12/2020 18:03

We've had two quotes for around £3000 including VAT. Moving 10 miles. Maybe less.

Separate charges for disassembly and reassembly of beds etc - which I assumed was included !

MoirasRoses · 24/12/2020 21:54

@LouLou789 - also Yorkshire here. We used a removal company with smaller vans, not huge ones. A local company. We moved 5 miles.

We moved a 3 bed town town house in two box truck transits. They sent 3 men & they were bloody fantastic. They made the whole day completely stress free. We were already completely packed ourselves.

They charged us £100 an hour. They were with us in total from 8.30-3.30 but didn’t charge us for their lunch hour. So £600 in total.

I’m really shocked at these quotes above! Def shop around! You do not need to pay thousands for a decent removal company!

LouLou789 · 24/12/2020 22:18

@MoirasRoses thank you, I did think it was expensive

Whoisgoingdownthechimney · 24/12/2020 23:21

Thanks all. I have requested a couple of quotes from local companies but not expecting to hear anything now until the new year.

I asked another removal co (recommended by our friends) for a quote and instead of the £1440 quoted by the first people, my new quote is £633. It’s definitely worth shopping around!

MrsTWH · 30/12/2020 13:29

We’ve been quoted £1750 + VAT to move a big 4 bed to a big 5 bed a mile down the road, including a 2-day full pack service.

TigerDrawers · 30/12/2020 14:29

I've just found the quote from when I moved last time (2012!). I remember being v impressed with the price back then but even now it's surprised me again. £443 for a move from a 3 bed 3 storey town house to another 2 storey house about 2 miles away. That was with me packing everything and they "loaned" me 25 boxes and tape.

25 boxes was nowhere near enough, but thankfully I knew someone that worked for a different removal company (too far away to use though) who got me some more boxes for free.

The same company was used by a colleague to move from North London to East Yorkshire. It was a three day move and cost him £1,750. Again, this was probably 10 years ago.

Whoever you go with, make sure they're regulated by the BAR and have adequate insurance cover. Go for those with good reviews (solicited from local social media pages or word of mouth, rather than review sites) and always have a backup too as if the moving date changes the original remover may be fully booked on your new day.

LouLou789 · 30/12/2020 16:14

@TigerDrawers Good advice there!

Baxdream · 30/12/2020 16:35

£1200 for full packing service- 4 bedroom to 4 bedroom

shallbe · 30/12/2020 18:20

4 figures for proper removals company and packing, so we paid £200 for a man with a van to move us 20 miles, 3 bed to 4 bed, he brought two teenagers with us, took him 2 runs and was done in half a day. I tipped him well!

We've moved A LOT from ourselves through to national companies, man with a van is a good compromise.
