Where is your boot room located in your house? At front entrance, utility room or back door area?

By the back door, doubling as a utility room

I want one and probably could squeeze one in because of planned renovations but I don’t know if I’ll find it too much of a hassle (I’m lazy) going all the way round to the back entrance which require unlocking and locking the gate.

At the front entrance there is no room just the hallway and the flooring is wood but I do not like mess so it would drive me crazy having dirty shoes and boots enter inside.

Any clever options for a front hall boot room? The house is an ordinary large-ish semi detached.

Could you maybe stick a big pitch on the front and use that for outside coats/boots? Not sure what else to suggest if there's no room inside

*porch even

We have an integral garage so boot room is in the garage. After a muddy walk we enter though the garage and shuck the muddy stuff, wash our hands and enter the house that way straight for a cuppa in the kitchen.

with two rooms downstairs and two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs shoes go on a rack in our bedroom and coats are hung in the two foot by two foot hall by the front door

We have a boot room at the back of the house. We come in through the boot room, to the kitchen.

BathshebaWasOnTheRoof · 24/12/2020 16:05

My neighbours have a great porch that they use as a boot room.

It’s a square shape and they have a coat rack, pegs, shoe storage, store umbrellas and stuff there too. It’s been nicely done and because it’s quite wide there’s nothing blocking your walk from the porch door to the house door.

Changi · 24/12/2020 16:06

Back door with a loo and utility off. Up the steps to the kitchen.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz · 25/12/2020 15:12

I’m hoping to add a porch soon, that way shoes can stay out of the hallway.
Is that an option?

gnomeisland · 25/12/2020 15:22

In the basement, next to the boiler room. We've got heated boot racks.

Our boot room is also our utility- sink and washing machine and tumble drier in there which is super handy when you need to Chuck muddy socks etc in the machine!

IamthatIam · 25/12/2020 16:45

@gnomeisland you’re such a show-off Grin. A porch might be a good solution but it would eat into the driveway.

I might have to have it custom built rather than buying off the shelf.

Ours is the back door BUT we don't really use it that way because I can never persuade people to use the back door. So I'd say if you possibly can get a space at the front of the house then do! Or train your family better than I did.

ThreeLadsPointingAtAStar · 25/12/2020 17:31

Mine's at the back but the house is a bit odd because the parking is at the rear of the house so you naturally use the back door.
I love it - dog leads and boots live out there - turtle mats at the entrance and then again at the door that leads into the house.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/12/2020 17:36

Oldish Army house... We have a 'cloakroom' by the front door. That is a large downstairs toilet with coat hooks and room for a lot of shoes.

ThreeLadsPointingAtAStar · 25/12/2020 18:40

Forgot to add we have an outside tap right outside the external door - great for sluicing down wellies before you go in

VenusClapTrap · 26/12/2020 09:01

We are about to renovate our kitchen/utility/downstairs loo area. I’m utterly sick of my hallway being a sea of coats, shoes and school bags, so we are moving the utility room door to make it more accessible, and that will become a boot room. All shoes and coats will live in there, and we are going to put a shower in the downstairs loo so that Dh can peel off all muddy cycling things, put them straight into the washing machine and himself into the shower before entering the rest of the house.

It will require some training, but we already park at the rear of the house so it will only be a small adjustment to get everyone to enter through the new utility room door instead of the main back door (which goes into the hall next to the lounge).

RandomMess · 26/12/2020 09:26

Ours is the porch. The coats are in the inner hallway but the shoe rack and drawers of dog walking clobber are in the small porch.

The front door and hallway day are at right angles to each other so visitors don't walk through it as such.

Would love to rip it out and build a much bigger on as it's a single brick fill in that used to be the bin shelter.

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 26/12/2020 09:39

It needs to be wherever you enter the house. Otherwise it'll not get used as it should.

OptimisticPrime · 26/12/2020 21:33

Ours is near the front door but not right next to it. It was the pantry before we extended. Just shelves to the ceiling for all boots, shoes, work bags, school bags, gym kit. Pegs for hats, and boxes for gloves etc, and about 20 hooks for coats. It’s superb! We have a separate utility which has a back door opening into the drive. It has a huge doormat and a tiled floor. And a ceiling mounted drying rack and a small coat rack for drying. Works perfectly for us.

OnceUponARainbow · 26/12/2020 21:41

Ours is at side of house and has become our main entrance/exit as a family. Coat pegs, multiple shoe racks, heated shoe dryer, ceiling dryer for wet stuff. It is brilliant and saves mud being tramped everywhere else. Floor always seems muddy but better there than elsewhere. Utility room comes off it so ideal for putting stuff in wash post mud splattering!
