Hi, I am about to relocate to York from Manchester and am considering a few different areas (was taken by South Bank at first), but Acomb has caught my eye and I’m wondering if it’s a good area to live? I used to think Acomb was a bit rough but is this still the case? Is it on the up? I have a 4 year old and so I’m also after primary school recommendations please! Thanks in advance!

Depends which bit of Acomb, the nicer bit is towards Holgate. Acomb Primary is good, avoid the catchment for Carr. You can check catchments here - www.york.gov.uk/SchoolCatchmentAreas

You will get more for your money in Acomb, but there are nicer parts York to live in.

Hello, I live in acomb (well, technically Holgate but we say acomb), and we LOVE it. Big houses, big gardens, nice park, December and improving local shops.

I think there are a few decent primaries, but no doubt other people are more able to comment and will reply in due course.

We have lots of friends who live within five minutes or so of us and it's just lovely.

We all live (just about) in a certain geographical area- feel free to message me : )

December? Clearly I meant decent.....

@FlopMadeMeDoIt thanks. Can you recommend any other areas? I like the south bank area but I feel like it’s overpriced due to its popularity and would need to choose elsewhere if I want a bigger house and garden, parking etc.

@NotMaryWhitehouse Thankyou! This is the general opinion I seem to be hearing about acomb. Also Holgate seems lovely but the houses are bigger and perhaps out of my budget. Are there parts of Acomb to avoid? It’s hard to know from a distance!

OP I'm not very familiar with Acomb but Fulford and Heworth are nice with good primaries (and secondaries, a bit further down the line for you). Lots of 1930s housing with good gardens and driveways. I think the South Bank/ Bishopthorpe Rd area has become very ££ as it's considered trendy.

FlopMadeMeDoIt · 23/12/2020 20:29

Agree that Fulford and Heworth are both nice, Rawcliffe is nice as well and not as expensive as other areas. Huntington I am less familiar with but has v good schools, which draws a lot of people there.

FlopMadeMeDoIt · 23/12/2020 20:36

Also good luck for the move, York is a great place to live!

AnjouPear · 23/12/2020 20:37

You probably get more for your money in Huntington. It seems perfectly nice although I don't know it very well. Huntington secondary is well regarded but I don't know much about Huntington primary (except that they always used to beat my kids' school in sports tournaments!)

@LaLaLaLaH I suppose like most cities (albeit a small one!), you can move very quickly from streets you'd like to ones you'd not, for a variety of reasons!

Do you have an idea of size/bedrooms/£?

I'd honestly say visit and have a wander round the area, get a feel for it.

You'll love York, it's a great place to be, and so incredibly easy to get to London/Manchester/Edinburgh.

LaLaLaLaH · 24/12/2020 20:37

@NotMaryWhitehouse yes I think you’re right. And the “rough” areas of York aren’t really rough like they are in Manchester!
I’m after a 2/3 bed, up to £230k. Pref 3 bed as I’ll be wfh at times, but I know that’s pushing it in some of the nicer areas.

@AnjouPear, @FlopMadeMeDoIt yes those areas seem nice. I’m trying to stay south/ west of York. I really like hewarth and Fulford but might be out of my budget for the space I want.
