Hopefully exchanging and completing in early January. The home insurance on my current house runs out next week. Do I just need to take out another whole year of insurance the suck up the cancellation charges?

I think you can transfer your home insurance to your new house. Or at least that’s what I did when I moved house. It might be worth having a chat with your insurance company to see if they do the same?

We're with L&G home insurance and when we moved house we informed them when we had exchanged and they covered our new home and existing home at the same time until we completed. They didn't charge any extra either. Might be worth getting a quote from them and some other providers who may offer similar?

I've just had the same issue but the increased cost of insurance for my new house (bigger house) plus the change fees meant it was significantly more economical to let the old policy expire (and cancel the renewal) and get a new policy in place with another insurer from the move date. I think they overlapped by about 2 weeks. Not sure if that would have caused an issue had we had to claim during that two weeks though?

We took out a new policy for our old house and then transferred the policy to the new address.
Our insurance provider, Nationwide, didn't charge any extra for this but some providers do charge an admin fee.

When I was in a similar situation I renewed then the insurance company refunded me what was still unused

Yes you have to take out the 12 months policy.
But when you move you can do a change of address on that policy instead of cancelling
