Party wall advice please

Our neighbours did a huge build and added double side and front extensions adjacent to us. Due to high fencing/scaffold we didn’t really see the work/extent of excavation until post build. We did not object as if no impact then happy for them to build. They did not however put in place a party wall. I was very ill during the time (hopistalised) so didn’t pick up on this. Cut to a few years later, we are doing a much smaller extension and they are being difficult.

They have raised the need for a party wall - ok we were going to do this as is correct to. But I wonder if anything they have done as part of their dodgy build (he told my husband he chucked a few abestos building in the foundation rather then get rid of properly) will come back to bite us and if so, if we can challenge the poor quality or lack of party wall agreement retrospectively....

TIA

Google tells me that “Your neighbours may seek compensation if they can prove they have suffered a loss as a result of the work, and it could even require removal of the work. The same applies if you have a party wall agreement with your neighbours but fail to observe the terms agreed”

Am I correct to translate as if they have screwed up as part of their build and it prevents ours, they will have to correct this?
