Stressing about house move practicalities

I've handed notice in on my tenancy and we're handing the keys over at the end of the month.

I have a shitload of things to do, some of which I hadn't even thought about before. I work FT as does DH, am working longer hours and barely functioning but been dealing with all the house buying stuff and rental stuff too (we only moved in in October). So it's pretty full on, haven't even unpacked everything here.

Am waiting to get quotes for removals. Fortunately we're not moving far but so much needing done/people needing notified. What can I do about energy supplier? I'd transferred to another supplier, I think I can move them with us but I don't even know what date we'll be moving out as it's dependent on availability of whatever moving company can help. Internet will need moved, council tax. Argh.

I'm just hitting a wall over work and this as well. Suddenly everything needs done :(

We’ve just moved (Monday) & I didn’t do anything until yesterday! I sat down yesterday & did all my admin.

Energy - nothing you need to do now. You need to take meter readings when you leave (agree these with your landlord & take photos) & then when you are in your new house, call your provider & inform them. You can either ask them to close your current account or you can ‘take them with you’. In reality, this means setting up a new account for your new house. If you want to keep your current supplier & they don’t currently supply your new house, the switch takes 3-4 weeks. In the meantime, contact the current supplier & get yourself on a temporary tarrif. Personally, I’d close your current account & shop around for the best rates!

Council tax - there was an online form to complete in my area. Again, you couldn’t do it until you have a date. So put on your to do list for when you move.

Internet- exactly the same. Once you have a completion date, let them know. It’s unlikely you’ll have Internet the day you move in but you might be lucky. We exchanged 5 day’s before completion (move date was set at exchange) & sadly, we’ve got 8 days without internet.

Removal companies - I’m sure all different but the ones we tried would not book us in until we had a fixed date. Some offered provisional bookings but they were kinda pointless as when another mover exchanged & had a firm date, we lost the booking as we couldn’t confirm 😫 it’s a bit shit but you just need to remain open to using any company you can find!

Insurance - addresses can all be changed once you move.

TV Licence - change your address once you’ve exchanged or again, wait until you’ve moved. I did.

Basically, don’t panic. Set yourself an admin day a couple days after you move in (assuming you are taking a bit of time off work?) & go through all your paperwork. I found most companies you could update your address online. I had to call a couple.

When you speak to the removals people, see if they offer a "quarter pack". We couldn't afford to have the whole house packed up, but they came the day before and packed up the entire kitchen for us. It was amazing, and massively time saving, as the kitchen is always the most faff to pack. Plus it meant we could keep the kitchen running for meals etc right up until the day before we moved. So much simpler and a massive load off our minds.

Good luck with the move.

Make a list of all the people you need to notify of moving. Work through it line by line and tell them the change of address, some you can do after you move.
Go to the post off / royal mail site and get mail redirected, do this TODAY as it takes a while to implement. Ditto broadband provider.
Get quotes for removals including packing and book them.
Book a cleaner for the end of tenancy clean.

Thank you everyone, that's really helpful! Got a couple of quotes for removals (I was panicking about this as some companies weren't getting back to me) and they're quite cheap so that's good. I guess it's the whole coordinating moving furniture (we're just getting removals to move the big stuff, will move the other stuff ourselves) and all the utilities so that we're not left without internet during the week as we both need it for work, particularly DH.

Need to arrange the end of tenancy clean, family said I should just sort it myself but I'm not very good at cleaning really. Certainly not "to a professional standard"...
