sander for hard to reach areas

I hate white glossed window sills with a passion so my plan is to strip these right back and have oiled or varnished natural wood. There seems to be several layers of gloss on the sills though, has anybody actually managed to restore the wood and what sander is recommended?

The sills have a bevelled edge so are even trickier

Got all the horrible brown varnish off our stairs, bannisters etc.

I've used a heat gun in the past but this was far less labour intensive and you have to be careful about waving heat around near glass

You just need to have gloves, wire wool, and some nice scratchy rags for cleaning.
