Metro tiles - done to death?

We've put metro tiles in our new bathroom - with one blank wall as paint.

Just read on another post that they are done to death - surely not? Shock.

For some people they are classic, others are sick of them. 'Twas ever thus. If you love them that's really all that matters.

BigusBumus · 27/11/2020 13:22

They are done to death, but they are still great looking tiles I think.

I'd still choose them over something more faddy, I think they've become "classic" status now.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/11/2020 13:22

Every TV makeover show seems to include them. I think they look like tiling in council toilet blocks.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/11/2020 13:48

I’ve never liked them. They’re too reminiscent of smelly old fashioned public lavs.
Each to their own, though. But they are/were a fashion, like grey all over everything, and every fashion dies the death sooner or later.

JoJoSM2 · 27/11/2020 13:54

They’re just normal tiles.

VinylDetective · 27/11/2020 14:17

They’re a classic - and one which I really like. Changing fads and fashions are so wasteful, just have what you like. I bet the “not done to death” alternatives date a lot faster.

A timely thread!

we are going to redo our bathroom next year and I have been looking at Metro tiles. I also think they have entered classic status

they seem to pop up a lot in Scandi interior decorating pictures which I like a lot

of course some people would say the Scandi thing has been done to death too but I have given up caringSmile

I have metro tiles and love them, I think they are classic

Mydogisagentleman · 27/11/2020 14:41

I am planning white ones for my kitchen.

Tootsietoot · 27/11/2020 14:43

I redid our bathroom in them 10 years ago..was worried then they had had their day after a similar comment on Mumsnet 😂

I'm liking them, they aren't bevelled, and grey grout.

Sometimes wonder if it's all a bit 90s police cell. But they were rarely accessorised with pink fluffy towels.

I’ve just put them in my guest en-suite - navy in one, plain white in the other. I like them because they are quite subtle. They were inexpensive.

In the kids’ bathroom I’ve gone for herringbone marble, and that’s the one that people have reacted to as though I’ve gone wild and crazy and told me it will date!

VinylDetective · 27/11/2020 16:10

My kitchen has cream metro tiles with grey grout, there’s nothing remotely police cell about it.

ComtesseDeSpair · 27/11/2020 16:13

I wouldn’t have them because I don’t want my bathroom to look like the inside of the Rotherhithe Tunnel, and yes they’re done to death - but if you like them then that really is all that matters.

Letsplough · 27/11/2020 16:15

I put grey ones in my kitchen as they were cheap & it was only a small area, they look great in my opinion, I also don't think they are dated.
If you like them use them.

urghhhh · 27/11/2020 16:15

I love them but am also sick of them. Unsure what a good alternative is though.

Duckwit · 27/11/2020 16:20

This is exactly how I feel about them! Or prison showers or something. Especially when they are the white with the dark grout!

DildoAndAKneeAss · 27/11/2020 16:21

I think it all depends on the style of your house. I've got them in a Victorian bathroom, where they look very good with a roll top bath etc. However, I've just renovated a modern property and have deliberately not used them there because they would look out of place.

inside of the Rotherhithe Tunnel did make me Grin!

I do like metro tiles though, but maybe not a combination of bottle green and white!

PresentingPercy · 27/11/2020 16:37

I think they can look great with roll top baths and in warehouse conversions. The alternative is anything from Porcelanosa! Tiles in large format are to die for! Classy and chic at the same time. Lovely rustic finishes and even wood, stone, marble, Matt or glosss finishes. Definitely don’t date and not done to death.

SlopesOff · 27/11/2020 16:39

I moved into a place in the early 90's that had just been done up with them, and I really liked them.

I still like them but had the feeling they might be a bit 'old' now. However I would prefer them to those little mosaic ones with sparkly bits that were in fashion a few years ago, and most certainly would get them rather than those hideous huge beige 90's hotel style ones.

I have looked at the walls in my current house and would love to replace the tiles with metro tiles. They lift a room.

I think wood look tiles will date very badly indeed.
Jackieofallltrades · 27/11/2020 16:47

Done to death yes but still great neutral tiles? The alternative bathroom tiles seem to be nasty beige things or tiny mosaic tiles which have been done to death for centuries it seems!

VinylDetective · 27/11/2020 16:47

I agree. And I detest the enormous beige ones too. Who thinks beige is a good colour anywhere in their house? It sucks the joy out of everything.
