Metro tiles - done to death?

We've put metro tiles in our new bathroom - with one blank wall as paint.

Just read on another post that they are done to death - surely not? Shock.

The enormous beige ones are hideous, a friend has just had her bathroom redone and they're on all 4 walls and the floor. Feels like you're inside a toilet roll tube in there!

urghhhh · 27/11/2020 16:52

The alternative bathroom tiles seem to be nasty beige things or tiny mosaic tiles which have been done to death for centuries it seems!

As @VinylDetective says why beige, just a gross colour. Tiny mosaic are unpractical for me, the less grouting the better in my eyes.

I'm from Paris and have known the metro tiles since my first trip on the metro when I was 6 weeks old so they're absolut classic for me.

They also remind me of my primary school lavatory and I love that vibe. I may even consider the wall mounted rotating soap thingy for my bathroom that I'm going to renovate next year (with metro tiles obvs)

inside of the Rotherhithe Tunnel did make me !

Well at least when I have my shower in the morning my day can only get better I suppose 😂😂😂😂

PresentingPercy · 27/11/2020 17:53

I did not say I would choose wood, only that they are available. I like tiles with character. So matt and textured surfaces. Interesting random patterns like molten metal. Mixes of gloss and matt. I think large format is easier to clean and definitely not a Council loo look.

Metro tiles were fashionable with old fashioned loos and retro bath fittings. They are now everywhere. Sometines I think no one ever looks at anything else. I see them all the time in pub loos. Not going to have them in my house though.

@Tootsietoot

I redid our bathroom in them 10 years ago..was worried then they had had their day after a similar comment on Mumsnet 😂
Same. And I'd use them again. These are gorgeous.

I'm fairly agnostic on them personally, can look great (as in that pic), can look like the Rotherhithe Tunnel (as a PP noted!).

What I think is more interesting is to lay them in something other than brick format. So for a spin on the pic @SwedishEdith posted, there's this (via the excellent Busola Evans on Instagram)

I personally love the metro look and would live in a Victorian Tube station like a hobbit hole given a chance. Something that's been around 150 years can hold its own.

sunshinesupermum · 27/11/2020 18:56

Metro tiles always look like public loos. Just choose something that looks less like sanitaryware especially in the kitchen!

sunshinesupermum · 27/11/2020 18:57

SwedishEdith yours are a fab colour. Its the white ones i object too.

ivfbeenbusy · 27/11/2020 19:05

Personally the bevelled ones look better as the flat ones can be very prisoner cell block. I'd only ever do one wall in it though or at least change direction of the tile on one wall?
You'll be forever bleaching the grout to keep it looking nice though

missbunnyrabbit · 27/11/2020 20:45

I love them! Think they are classic.

Katjolo · 27/11/2020 21:07

Love them!

VinylDetective · 27/11/2020 21:14

That applies to any tiles if you use white grout.

Itscoldouthere · 27/11/2020 21:18

Yes a bit done to death but I still love them. I like them in big sections though, hate to see piddly splashbacks or just the shower area, we always do full walls.
I will keep on using them, in my opinion that are classic.

Itscoldouthere · 27/11/2020 21:19

Also you need a really good tiler to get the corner cuts right!

GiraffeNecked · 28/11/2020 07:40

I dislike ‘those hideous huge beige 90's hotel style ones’. We looked at several houses with those and they suck the joy out of you. One had them in a windowless en-suite wet room. It was like walking into a cave.

Our en-suite is tiles like this and wood effect tile flooring. This will date horribly I’m sure but I love it!

Bevelled metro look Like dust gatherers' to me....and also our local brewery used them when refitting every pub loo.

Classic. I dont have any in my house but I'd happily live with them if we bought a house with them.

scentedgeranium · 28/11/2020 07:46

we have metro tiles but have laid them herringbone fashion and they look great. We have a real mix of colours and textures in our bathroom though so the first thing that hits you isn't 'oh those are herringbone tiles'!

scentedgeranium · 28/11/2020 07:47

I meant to say 'the first thing that hits you isn't "oh those are METRO tiles"'!
durrr

wowfudge · 28/11/2020 07:50

Compare them to a wall of the standard format square tiles not done in brick pattern and Metro are a design classic. The square ones look like something straight out of the 70s.

rumandbiscuits · 28/11/2020 08:52

I've just done metro tiles in my new bathroom and love them Smile also have them in my kitchen just a different colour. It's personal choice but I think they are classic and stylish.

scentedgeranium · 28/11/2020 09:07

Excuse the scruffiness but here's how we've used metro tiles
