Loft window budget costs?

Hi all.

We have a floored (carpeted) and lit loft, which DSD (teen) wants to move into as her bedroom. (It's far bigger than her room, and is apparently "so cool!!" 😂🙈

She's happy to use the existing ladder access, and we will need to put some plasterboard walling up and various decor for her.

However, I have reservations of allowing her to do this at the moment, as there is no window in the loft - I worry about fire safety, particularly keeping the ladder access, and also just for light and air quality!

I don't want to spend a fortune on a loft window install, as we just don't have it at the moment. (Hence we are not doing a full scale loft conversion!) Any idea of a rough budget cost for both the window itself, and install in an existing roof, so that I can manage timescale of her expectations?

I did as a child have an 'attic bedroom' twice, both cases not in full scale loft conversions, and I loved it. However, I did always have a window!

Standard sized velux windows aren't that expensive at all - have a look on eBay. & to simply fit one into the roof of a loft (so no plaster work / making good etc required) shouldn't cost much - £400-500 maybe?

I'm thinking of doing something similar - my loft is pretty spacious, boarded out, has a big rug, power and lights, & a couple of velux windows do appeal. The problem is, for it to be more useable you really have to insulate the rafters & plasterboard it all out - & if you can't do that yourself, then the cost of paying someone likely doesn't make sense over just going the full hog with a proper staircase & a legitimate, certified loft conversion.

Velux website will give you all the different sizes and prices. I heard from a joiner mate that people charge 400 quid to fit one not sure if everyone is the same but it’s a start 👍
