Any plumbers with knowledge of Rayburns?

I am waiting on call back from three plumbers already (not holding my breath) so thought I may as well post here just in case I get a response.

We have a solid fuel Rayburn which is plumbed in to provide our heating and hot water.
We also have an immersion tank for the warmer months when we don't light the Rayburn.
We have a gravity fed shower (this is on the ground floor, immersion is in room above)
The shower works fine all Spring and Summer but come winter when we light the Rayburn it becomes temperamental.
If we turn the shower on it runs fine until the hot water starts to feed through and then it cuts off. If I bang the pipe between the valve and where it travels up to the shower head it will eventually start running again. Obviously I don't want to keep belting the pipes, I'm going to break them!

Does anyone have any idea what the issue is?
