Will there be more properties in January?

DH and I are hoping to move house soon, but it seems like there’s not a huge amount of choice in the areas we want to live at the moment. And it seems to be getting even quieter as we head towards Christmas!

Is January traditionally a time when more properties come onto the market? I’d just like to have a bit more choice and get some viewings booked!

Right now is notoriously quiet. Apparently Boxing Day gets the most views on Rightmove (when people are bored). Lots start viewing in Jan and more usually comes on, peaking around Feb-June I believe.

Certainly in my area there were a lot of houses left on the market in the summer when I began looking, and now almost nothing is added week to week. Seeing two today but will be a bit desperate if they don't work out!

I'd think that very early Jan there may be a last minute flurry of people trying to move before the stamp duty holiday ends in March.

Thanks everyone - roll on January!

I don't think January will be more property coming market next year because of current situation.
I have been through house hunting from summer 2019 until today. In January/February 2020, it does come out several properties but that is after general election, people seem to feel confident with the conservative party, build confidence in brexit & future economy.
Now it comes Jan/Feb 2021, people already lost the confidence with economy, government handling with this pandemic, so many jobs will be lost in the end of March even Rishi Sunak admitted to 2.6 million job loss in April to June 2021. With stamp duty holiday ends by end of March if no extension , people will hold back to see whether the market will correct itself. Seller won't sell either because of little demand.
My prediction is more property comes out market by summer (June to September 2021) which is mainly from bank re-procession/forced sale property.
